This one is gonna have a urinal.

Anyhow, this blind will stand about 4 ft off the ground, the base is already built and is exactly 8x4'.

I'm debating on things like inside window framing, window sizes, etc. Here is what I have so far.. this is from the inside looking out the front. I plan on using deer view hinged windows.

You can ignore the sheath area below, that's just going to hang below the floor covering part of the legs.

I'm a little concerned about the 1x3's... i'd like a better shooting rest.. but maybe they will be OK.

Personally, i'd go with the 2x2's vs. 1x3

I use 2x4 with the 2inch side attached to the wall.this allows four a four inch rail and shelf at window height. Great place for optics and other items needed in a hurry.

my only concern with that is having enough space for the hinges and latches for the deer view windows.

Well, maybe go with a 2x4 on the top rail if you're concerned with the hindges.. I just built one with 2x2's and windows/hindges were fine.. I just think the 1x3 wouldn't be sturdy enough...imo.

43 might be a little high on the window height

I thought you were joking about the urinal!

1. I agree with the above comment about the windows. It depends on your size and the chairs you plan to use, but on my recent build my son and I tested different window location heights (using the old office chairs that will go into our blind), and we found 38 inches to be the best location height for us (for the floor to bottom distance). Don't forget that one tends to lean over and down while aiming.

2. We also tested window size, and 10 to 12 inches is about the correct window height. Any bigger than that you might be over-exposed, and any smaller may not be comfortable. However, we though 24 inches was too short for the width, so we went with 30 inches, especially as our blind location has a wide field of view for potential shooting lanes.

For 1 and 2, we tested out the measurements (in our kitchen, carefully checked the rifle to make sure it's unloaded!) where I made a sample window using books and wood (for the top) to see how the different sizes felt. We practiced placing the rifle in the hole to make sure the dimensions worked for us.

3. We added a shooting shelf (1x4) flush with the bottom of the window, but going across all the sides, also useful for putting things on it (food, drinks, gloves, equipment). That way things are not on the floor where they can be hard to find or kicked.

Jaymz,
I'm currently working on my own blind and always looking for new ideas. As I was reading through, I personally liked (and almost used) the idea of the 2 X 4 UNDER the window so it would double as a shelf.

DON'T do that. Your design with the 2 X 4 above the window flat will work just fine. However, keep in mind the hinged windows sit flush on the inside. Basically a 1/2" overlay on every side. You cannot do that if the bottom side were used as a shelf and stuck out farther than the rest.

Also on that note. The first time I used the deerview windows, I miscalculated the openings versus the frame size. I'm assuming you've already done so, but just sharing from my mistakes. Remember to allow 1" difference for heighth and for width.

The blood trail that really matters leads to the cross!

yup. i went through the same thing when i first used deer view windows too.. this plan accounts for the difference in window size.

I'm going to make a couple of changes to the window sizes and add all the dimensions and material lists, then i'll post a pdf so if anyone wants it, they can download.

nice blind. Question on the hinge window. You made a rough opening of 10x22 for a 12x24 window. Thus a 2' less opening than the window size. According to the website, it says make the opening 1' less than the actual size. Which is the way to go?

Consider how high off the ground it will be. The higher it is, the lower the window needs to be.
If its going up more than 6-8', you'll wan to drop it an inch or two.

I build LOTS of blinds. If you're 6'4"-6'5", you need the bottom of your window 42" from the floor...assuming a typical desk chair in there and average legs under stand.
Built one once for a guy that's 6'6" with 12' legs. He insisted in 42" window height(even after I warned him), and he still regrets it. Says he can't see anything closer than 40yds from the stand.

You should consider adding shutters on the windows at least 2 or 3 inches larger than the window (bigger is better). I use 4" straps from load binders (used on 18 wheelers) for hinges. Put a 1/4" eye bolt on the bottom center of the shutter and drill a corresponding hole in the stand and secure the shutter with a wing nut when not in use. Adjustment of the shutter is by a rope from the eye bolt through a hole in the top of the stand, use a heavy spring clamp on the rope to adjust the height. Wonderful for rain and glare from the sun. Deerview windows that hinge up to the inside is the way to go. You can clean both sides from inside the stand and plexiglass will scratch and cloud in short order.

Personal preference. 1" less is the recommended ideal cut, the 2" cut difference will not make a difference.
