I heard a story the other day that has been bothering me. First off i'd like to say that i believe when introducing a new guy/girl to hunting you should help them as much as possible. Unfortunately some people just dont understand that. So a friend of my Uncles (we'll call him Frank) showed him a picture of a 13 pt. hoss of a buck from nacogdoches county. He said he estimated the score at around 165. Frank felt sorry for a coworker because his father had passed away a month earlier and the coworker would not be able to spend thanksgiving with his late father. Frank decided to bring his coworker out to his lease to shoot a buck. The coworker bought his first license ever, got an extension on his hunter safety, and was excited to go hunting for the first time in his life. Frank knew this, but decided to put the coworker in his stand with directions to only shoot a cull or a spike. Frank walked down the road a ways to another stand. After awhile frank heard a shot, but decided to wait until dark to head back to camp. When he got there and saw the coworker with the huge buck he became furious and told the coworker to load up the buck and leave and never come back. Frank then called the game warden (a friend of his) and told him where the coworker lived and that he had tagged the deer wrong. Apparently when the game warden arrived at the coworkers house, the deer had been tagged wrong, he had cut the bucks head off at the base of the skull, and cut the backstraps out. The deer was not skinned or gutted, and the rest of the meat was spoiling. The deer was confiscated and the hunter was fined big time im sure. Now i realise that the coworker should have studied up on the handbook and just took the deer to the processor, but all of this could have been avoided if Frank would have just sat in the stand with him and took the time to introduce him to the sport. Im saddened that such a beautiful buck went to waste because of the ignorance of both parties.

Many yrs. past when I used to hunt West Texas and we needed an extra guy for the lease, my buds then, got a newbie, who'd never
hunted with a new Texas Liquor Store 30-30 got him to pay a share
of the lease and left him in camp. I found a good track sat him
on a ravine close by and he got a 30 in West Tx muley first time
he ever hunted..they all tried to screw him out of it. I helped
him clean it, got a buddy taxidermist to mount it for the adv. on
his business..ect..After 3 or 4 yrs. he still didn't realize what
he had and thought there was nothing to hunting and killing a big
deer..DD

Not sure why Frank would get mad in this case. Its his fault that the wrong deer was shot. You never stick someone brand new to hunting in a blind alone there first time out, or for that case there first 10 times out. This happened to a friend of mine several years ago. Took a guy that had never been deer hunting out, put the guy in the blind told him he can shoot anything he likes but leave the "big 1 " alone.. My friend went to a different part of the ranch to hunt.. He went back at dark to pick up the new guy.. The new hunter had not shot 1, or 2 but 4 deer.. He had 2 bucks one being the big one and a smaller 8 point and 2 does.. Rather than getting mad, my friend was as excited as the new hunter.. My friend admitted that this was his fault putting a new hunter in a blind alone on his 1st deer hunting trip.

I'm sorry, but I blame your uncle. First off, he's your uncle's guest and therefore your uncle's responsibility. Your uncle knew going in that the guy had never hunted before and had no experience. Yet your uncle felt that putting this inexperienced, completely novice hunter in a stand by himself and with only instructions. You're uncle was asking for it.

No, the guest shouldn't have shot that buck and has now ruined a friendship and a potential open invitation to hunt. For that, he'll pay the price.

I'd have a talk with dear ol' uncle and explain how guests are the responsibility of the host. I'd probably explain to uncle that he's done for the year since his trophy was shot by his guest. Your uncle needs to learn a lesson too.

Guests hunt with their hosts for a reason.

One of several things that jump out at me is:

Quote:
The coworker bought his first license ever, got an extension on his hunter safety

So Frank took a new hunter out knowing that he had a Deferral for his Hunter Education then left the hunter in a stand by himself!!!!! Then gets ticked off about the new hunter killing the big deer.

So if the OP is true, I fully agree with the other opines of the Frank and if not for banned camp would express them further. One thing is for sure I would never want to share a hunting camp or anything else with Frank.

For the record my uncle just told me the story. The Frank guy is just a friend of my uncles. This all happened less than two miles from our place though.

Frank is as much to blame than the worm.

I have a friend who I introduced to hunting back in 2010. He had never shot a rifle before let alone ever gone deer hunting before. Each year we take him over a weekend to hunt but we always have him sit with myself or my dad.

This year we've finally let him sit by himself and he has proven to be able to recognize the differences in a cull or a trophy. Of course he has our permission to shoot either but still...letting a worm hunt by himself is recipe for trouble.

It sounds like Frank needs to accept responsibility for his screw up and file it away as a lesson learned. You never put a new hunter in a blind by himself with somewhat vague instructions. That will almost always end badly for the guy who left the new guy alone.

Yup.

And both are at fault. Really need more details as to the specificity of your Uncle's instructions, but there is NO excuse for failure to follow simple directions involving a firearm.

Sounds like the hunter put his own desires ahead of his respect for your Uncle. 2cents

Frank sounds like a real "Stand" up guy. NOT. What a Jerk. And that's putting it as nicely as I can get away with.

"Frank" is a scumbag, not helping the guy he took hunting out and then turning him in to the GW....

I hope I never have a "Friend" like Frank.

Seeing it was a new hunter and the way it went down makes me wander if Frank encouraged him to tag it wrong for revenge ?

Frank sounds like a douche.
But the new guy should have figured a way to go by the law once he shot his deer.
Hes an adult after all.
