What so u guys think about the 280 Remington cartridge . Looking at getting one.

Have you looked at the 280AI? One of Ackley's best.

Improved or not, the 280 is an excellent choice.

What's the range of the caliber.

I shoot a mod 70 280

Uncle shot a doe at nearly 700yds with his a few yrs back

Almost identical to 7mag up til 500yds

Way farther than you (generally) can shoot it accurately.

280 Rem or 280 AI are both great calibers.
Effective range- well, we shot a 7mm-08 with a 162 A-max at 1780 yards, and made 2 hits on a 36" plate last weekend. So, it will go further than what most people can shoot to.

It's a fine caliber, and fully equal to the 270. I'm a 270 guy, so I can't admit that it might even be a teensy bit better. Nah...no way...

I'm on my third .280 and am a real fan of it. I do think it's a better cartridge than the .270 on account of heavier bullets being available in 7mm (not to mention the greater variety of 7mm bullets available). I will say this though: if you're not a handloader, you'll probably get a bit more out of a .270 because factory .280 ammo is loaded to lower pressures than the .270 is. BUt if you are a handloader, the .280 is definitely the way to go between the two.

As far as the AI cartridges go, the .280 Ackley Improved is the best of all the AI cartridges. Again, if you're not a handloader you'd have to find .280 AI ammo and it's not all that readily available. You CAN fire factory .280 Remington in the AI chamber safely and that's fine for fireforming cases for reloading, but I'd rather have the AI ammo on hand to take advantage of the AI's performance potential. I suppose you could even hunt with .280 Remington ammo in the .280 AI, but I couldn't vouch for the kind of accuracy you'd see.

Same here - a fellow I know pretty well is thinking of selling. Remington in 280 Rem, excellent condition, but he doesn't know what model (not much of gun person) and I have never seen it. Bolt, synthetic, stainless, muzzle brake (he had added after purchase), Leupold (he thinks it's a 4-12x50). He hasn't decided on price but he said maybe $1200.

I haven't checked out ammo costs and availability but supposing his price is right I may pull the trigger.

I know it's pretty vague but what's your thought??

I've got a Rem. 280 Mtn. Rifle that shoots great. Imagine 30.06 power with speed.

This. I think of the 280 as a better .30-06.

I have been a .270 guy for a very long time. I had a .280 built off of a Remington action last year. It is a shooter. I like it for the heavier bullet options if I want them. It is a pretty flat shooter also and my Mule Deer rifle now.

If you wanted to shoot a .284 caliber I'd stick with either a 7mm-08 or a 7mm mag

i have 270 and 280 the only problem with 280 hard to find ammo at your average store. you can buy 270 and 30-06 anywhere.both great guns

Identical in that they will both shoot .284 cal bullets but thats it. The 280 lags behind on an average of 250 to 300 fps no matter the bullet weight.

The 280AI is an almost equal to the 7mm Rem Mag and better IMO if you are gonna reload. It is a more efficient cartridge without having to jump to a belted case. You will also have better barrel life. Let us not forget the difference in recoil. If you dont reload, the 7mag is the way to go for sure because there are no factory produced ammo for it (Except for the new 280AI SAMMI).

Apples to apples the 280AI is still a bit slower than the 7mag, and the gap widens as the bullet weight goes up. You just can't overcome the case volume of the mag. Nosler is making some pretty wild claims on velocity with their data, everyone elses is more realistic.

Given a choice between the two rounds, I chose the 280AI. It is a much more efficient cartridge with noticeably less recoil than the mag, and brass life is reportedly better. I have no complaints so far in my choice, and would do it again. Not that there's a huge gap between the two, but a 7mag, it ain't.
