You should be good. A 3-9 should be good out to at least 300 yards as long as the glass is good. I had one on a 6.8 and loved it.

3x9 should work great. Are u gonna hunt hogs at night? If so, you may want to get a scope with an illuminated reticle.

Maybe,,Not wanting to spend a lot of money on one, what does a decent one run?

I would urge you to consider the Millet DMS. I don't know what caliber your AR is, but that scope is a good compromise between a red dot optic and a huntable scope that allows you to shoot critters, gives you a precision dot optic for day or night hunting and still lets you play with the AR the way AR's should be played with.

http://www.opticsplanet.com/millett-1-4-x-24-dms-multi-coat-rifle-scope-bk81002.html

Otherwise, a 3-9x40 will cover everything you can ask an AR15 platform to do for hunting.

1-4x24 is a little small for what I'll be doing with it.

Thanks for the advise though..

What range do you plan on hunting. 1-4 is more then enough for hits out to 300 yards. It also allows you to use it somewhat like a red dot.

I have a Trijicon 1-4 and it smokes a 3-9. It's easier to line up. It's a whole lot better option if youre gonna have shots as close as 10' in front of you. With the enough power to reach out. It's also much better on close running shots.

I'd go with something like a 1-4 or if you really want more magnification a 2-7. You can hit really far out with 4x magnification, farther than you think.

Range will be out to 250-300 yards. My thinking is on 4 power out to 2-300 yards, whatever your shooting at is going to look like a dot in the scope. Probably will stick with the 3-9,,

Thanks for the advise..

I put a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9 on my 6.8 this year just because I had it laying around. First time hunting with it. I was pleasantly surprised how bright it was in low light. Think they are under $200.

I have had two Nikons prostaffs. IMHO, its the best scope for the price on the market. Both had the BDC. EXCELLENT SCOPES. Better then my japan made weaver by far.

Keep in mind most scopes really suck at the highest range. If you get a 3-9....it's more of a 3-8. Eye relief gets blurry at the max setting.

I have to be dead still to use my 1-4 on 4 power. If I back it down to 3, the view gets a whole lot easier to use off hand.

Probably go with either the Nikon or a Leupold VX-1

I have money on, if you look through both...you'll buy the Nikon. They really are bright. Just as bright as this over price Trijicon I just had to have. I should have bought a Nikon. Would have been just as happy...

There is absolutely no way I would go with a nikon. You will have problems with it and good luck with their customer service. Leupold's customer service will bend over backwards to help you. just my opinion

Yea, I was leaning toward the Leupold 3-9x40..Been using Leupold for many years and haven't had one fail me yet. Although mine are VX-II and VX-III, never owned a VX-I before. Anyone know how the VX-I preforms, or ever had any trouble with one?

You are on the right track. I would go with a Nikon Monarch 3-12x42. I bought one a couple years ago and now I have three of them on various rifles. Paid close to $240 each. You can find these gems new for less than $300 if you look hard enough online.

VX1 is the Ford escort of the line. When I bought my scope I looked at every brand. From what i read the VX1 doesn't use the same lens coatings, waterproofing, or seals as the upper models. Not sure if the glass is the same.

It's a good scope, it just uses leupolds older scope technology vs the upper models more advanced coatings and tech. Vx1 would be top of the line in the 1970's. Good scope none the less. Just dated tech.

Optics is just one of those things where you get what you pay for. I'd rather have a quality used scope, like a Leupold, versus the same money for a new one.
