Considering that it is just now the beginning of winter, I certainly hope so.

I'm gonna disagree on the centex and south area. Gadwalls, teal, redheads, wigeon are photo migratory. They leave based in length of daylight.

I've been at it for 32 yrs and now have a 10 yr logbook. Here's what I've seen. High numbers of above species up through mid dec, big lull of stale(birds that won't decoy cause they've been punched too many times).

Rebuilding of above species mid jan through feb as they ride the southerly winds back up.

We used to shoot a lot of mallards. 800+ in 97, 200 in 98, 100 ish in 99 and never more than 50 since. Mallards don "push" down here anymore. They hang up with all the flooded crop that hunters are planting. Last yr I saw a mid jan count of 800,000 mallards happily hanging out in Missouri. They never left either!

Birds certainly trickle in and out with fronts but my records show that fronts do more bad than good. It takes our coastal species and pushes em out. I had 3 ponds holding 500+ redheads, widg, pins on we'd. Front blew through yesterday......4 ducks this am! But I knew this was gonna happen so I am at work with a hot cup of coffee.

I've noticed the same thing as brazos, cold front pushes birds out and it doesn't seem to bring any more with it. Kinda frustrating

I haven't hunted but did do some scouting and early on we had probably what would be considered a record number of birds for the Barney. Since these little warm snaps we have had though they have thinned out considerably.

Last year new year's weekend was the big push and we were thick with birds all though the month of January. This year I have seen/killed more mallards than Gadwall. Matter of fact I blame Silver Creek and Ducks R Us. They really hurt the gadwall population last year grin

It's gonna be interesting. If the mallards just increase in numbers it will get ridiculous! I'm looking forward to the last month of the season. So to answer your question...no, I don't think I have seen the big push yet. At least I hope not.

Snow in Oklahoma this weekend will give a large number a push. I bet January will be good. We will see.

In the late 70's/early 80's, the rivers and lakes in south kansas would be solid ice from middle of Dec through Feb. They have only frozen up a couple times since. Once was 1990, I remember that cold 3 weeks!

If it doesn't freeze up in those "fly over" states with all the grain, I to believe the majority of the mallards won't migrate this far.

With that being said, we will see new birds almost each week from now until the end of the season. The will get up and move with each big north wind.

Mallards too. Some fly south just based on time of year, others need to be "pushed out" when it freezes over. The time sensitive mallards migrated down long time ago. I have not been out this week, but second split not sure I have seen any new ducks...

I know what you mean tho, fronts more times than not push out the gaddies and teal..

If there is anyone on here in the Killeen/Ft Hood area who is willing to take a soldier out to show me a few places to go for some good bird action I would be grateful.
Just returned from Afghanistan and have only been able to hit a few on post due to the low numbers of out of area birds coming into the area.
Thanks in advance,

SGT Patt
