Rustoleum. Don't thin it, don't spray it. Roll it on, brush it on or get a mitten. JMHO

Get the mitten, you'll save a ton of time.

I would make sure that the paint is for DTM(direct to metal) unless you plan on priming it first. Otherwise your paint may flake off in a few years.

Use a piece of window screen material to knock the rust off or at least limit it. Use a mitt as suggested. Just make sure you wear a latex glove underneath it.
Rustoleum works great. So does Valspar at Lowes. Its a paint and primer combined designed just for metal.

Some people mit on red oxide primer and leave it as a finish. Just depends on your project. I have been painting for a little over 32 years. If there is anything I can coach you through, dont hesitate to shoot me a pm.

Use the mits Led based paints were banned in 1978. For a contractor such as myself, we have to run led based tests on any house that was build before this time. And if it does have led based paint, we have to be led certified and go through a hell and back to actually do any work on that property. There is only one paint that I am aware of that still might have led for quick drying purposes, and thats paint for road construction.

Paint is not a very durable finish, as it creates some smell. Most of time paint are dangerous against heat. The moving parts on firearms don't like paint. Finally it will devalue the firearm.
