Very true on the Handi rifles..... As someone above also mentioned, there is the Remington 700 ADL (lots of upgrade options down the road). I would not rule out the Marlin XL7 or XS7 depending on caliber, there are SEVERAL options. It's going to boil down to your intentions with the rifle and future potential use. You say hunting centerfire.... but don't say what you plan to hunt.

You can only have too much ammo if you are on fire or swimming....

If you do not intend to sell or trade it, you can find a Savage
sometimes even in a hvy bbl model in your price range and almost
all of the shoot w/expensive rifles and they have a great trigger
now..not like the older ones. I wore one of the L/H models from the 60's out and rebbl'd it before it was stolen..and we sold hundreds of them at Bandera Gun Club and almost everyone was a good shooter..Don

I dont think you could go wrong with a savage remington ruger or wby vanguard.

I wouldnt even consider a rem 710/770 or savage axis or mosberg etc.

I just picked up a Remington 721 in .270 at a local pawn shop for $260. Very excited to see how this old gal shoots. Came with a Tasco 3X9-40, stock's in good shape, bluing's in good shape too.

Boom!

Been using the H&R Handy Rifle this year myself. .243. Nikon 3x9 40mm. Shoots really well out to 100. Taken couple deer with it.
Friend has same set-up, only in 7-08. He took a nice Mulie with his in fact.

Not the Savage Kit Guns..but Savage, Remington SPS both will usually shoot with very high $ weapons..and both have good triggers..stay away frm pencil thin bbls..DD

Savage is what I'm looking at. 110, not the Axis.

The NEF/H&R are great guns. I have had a .223, currently have a 25-06 and a .243, father in law has a 22-250. All of them are terrific shooters.

Remington 700 hands down. You don't sell 5 Million guns in one model and have a poorly built gun. If I spent $175 on a brand new rifle I would be worried on how it performed honestly.

I've got a savage axis in .308 with a Nikon pro staff on top. Drives nails and the deer don't run! Not fancy, but does the job.
