Im not sure if this is a chevy/ford type question but I am wanting to start catching hogs and looking at setting up a large corral type trap out of cattle panels. Not sure if one of the root type doors that they root up to get in, or a trip wire type, either guilitine or swing door.
What is everyone opinion on which door types work best?

I've tried them all and have best luck with the trip wire type with either a guilitine/drop or swing door that is either weighted, springed well, or locks shut. I've never been a fan of rooter doors or any other "push in" door, some people love them though. Many of your older pigs don't like pushing in like younger ones will. You can set up a trail cam on your trap & see what I mean. I normally set my trip wire to where it takes a little rough housing before it goes off, depends on what type of trap I'm using & what size it is. The best advice I can give you when it comes to trapping is tie that thing open & feed it every chance you get (or put a feeder in it). Once they're comfortable coming in then set it. If you shoot pigs in the trap, don't worry about the blood. Just tie your door back open, dump corn right on top of the blood & keep feeding. Also, especially with a large corral type trap when it comes to doors bigger is better. The bigger the door, the more likely you will catch the older more trap shy hogs and/or the whole sounder. Good luck!

For our 4x8 box traps, the root gate works best. Each type catches and equal amount of hogs, but the root gate catches more multiples. We wire it open about 6-8 inches from the ground so they see the opening, but when they go under the gate lifts and the wire comes off the gate and the gate falls behind them. We caught 7 in that trap once. Packed in like sardines!
