I place a hog trap, 4x8 box trap with swing door, two weeks ago. I have a feeder right next to it that is throwing corn into the trap itself. I tied the door open for over a week, game cam shows hogs at my feeder almost every night. Last Sunday afternoon I set the door on the spring. Poured about ten pounds of corn at the back of the trap and spread the rest all around the trap. Monday morning, nothing. They came in and cleaned up every kernel of corn around the trap but never went in. What am I doing wrong?

They just have to get use to the trap. Try putting some brush around it, leave the door open for a couple of weeks and they will go in. Another thing to do is put hog panelling around the feeder and if that doesn't work get some apples and a couple of water melon and break them inside the trap. They will go in with in a couple of days.

No, I did notice that I saw none in the trap while I had the door tied open eating.

Bait the trap not around it...........when they get hungry enough they will go in. Same with the feeder if it is not putting grain in just the trap your results will continue to be the same.

Stop giving them corn outside the trap.

Ok, I guess they are getting their fill yet still leery about actually getting in the trap....makes sense. Reason I put the trap next to the feeder was that my game cam show I draw in hogs and only hogs to that feeder. Friend of mine told me to tie the door open for a week or so but have it where the feeder throws feed towards the back of the trap to get the to start going in.
Should I place the trap away from the feeder but in the same general area, since the feeder is drawing them in almost every night?
Or should I place the trap in a new area all together?
Also as far as a hog pen, the area I hunt is all rock. T-post would be tuff.
Thanks for the all input, I'm learning lol

Personally ive never worked with rock... so i have no opinions about the T-post.. but i started a trough like container with feed at the door of the trap and waited a couple days.. moved it back about 4 feet into the trap then waited a couple more. then it was at the back checked my cam.. and set the trap. but the feeder needs to stay lol..

As long as they get corn from the feeder outside the trap they won't go in. Turn the feeder off and put the corn in the back of the trap. The other option is to figure a way to make the feeder put corn in just the back of the tra.

Get a five gallon bucket and fill half way with "cracked" corn. Take a gallon of butter milk and cover corn. Put in direct sun for 5 days. dig small hole in back of box and fill with this magical mixture. Stop baiting around the trap and place a corn trail outside the door to the back of the trap. Problem Solved!

I have a metal box trap that worked real well for a while, but then the pigs wouldn't go in it. No bait I tried would work. Then I read on somebody's post that pigs don't like walking on metal or heavy wire, which is what's on the bottom of my trap. I got a shovel and threw a lot of dirt on top of the wire and metal and had better luck with the pigs.

As for bait, I've tried everything. Corn soured with beer seems to work pretty well, though a local pig trapper says he uses only corn with diesel fuel on it. I think the soured corn works better, but only because the smell will travel for a long ways.

The buttermilk idea above sounds pretty good. I haven't tried that one. Since it's all about the stink, that should be a winner.

I met a guy down on the Missouri/Arkansas border he gets potato's puts em in a barrel with corn, sugar and yeast .Also said when he can get it he'll use bulk molasses . He dug a hole put a bucket in the hole to pour some of the mixture in then tops off with dirt and pulls the pen/trap back over it .He also said he had trouble gettin pigs to walk onto anything but dirt and rock

oops guess that border would be up to yawl.
