Went out this weekend to try and help a youth foster child bag his first doe. The ranch manager wanted us to shoot any 8 point we see. When we first get in the gate it looks promising with a massive 12 point and a doe in the food plot. We both get our hopes up and of course we get crushed by it. We hunted day and night, driving around just trying to see an animal. The piece of property we hunted on had a horrible grass fire that destroyed about 2/3 of the property. We thought forsure we would see something. So last night was our final chance and as we were driving around looking for deer we see a turkey just at dark. So the kid puts his 30-06 up and nails it! Considering it exploded but we were all excited! I was glad I finally got to rejoice in someone elses triumph than mine! up

my young man is now 17, I have enjoyed the journey...our 5th trip this weekend out this deer season...we still have yet to see a deer on our property...we too enjoy the hunting and experience but I got to tell this year it is getting to us...cows, weather etc. have gotten the best of our little piece of property...we still endeavor to persevere...

IAMAHUNTER, are you near Rough creek lodge? How is your food plot doing? I just got irrigation to one of my spots and the oats are making a comeback. This is in Somervell cty. Near Chalk mountain. Deer sightings are winding down to NADA. Oats will get them moving. Not much time left for general season. Good luck, and that was a good thing you did, taking the youngster out.

Just across the road from them and NADA so far. The oats are doing really good too. Acouple of dry patches here and there but there are a lot in most places. The deer seem to be nocturnal at our lease. I'm actually going down this weekend with a friend to do alittle duck/deer hunting. Are the deer even coming close to feeders right now or are the acorns still going strong?

Acorns are not gone, yet. There is nothing green in the pasture. I'm just down the road from you. I did see a Pheasant this morning. That's not uncommon, here. Rough Creek has been releasing them. I hear shooting, often. Nothing like following pointers in 80 degree weather.

That hunt will get better every time you remember it.
