what is a good way to remove rust from a gun barrel?

I used the household cleaner CLR on the inside of a barrel once and it worked fine. Out side I would use a dab of oil and some very fine steel wool or even a cloth to start and go from there.

Youtube has a lot of vids. Involves 0000 steel-wool and a variety of oils and/or solvents.

Ammonia based cleaners like Blue Wonder and fine steel wool will effectively kill rust with out harming the bluing

Aluminum foil, and WD40. Scrub barrel length wise.
Thats for heavy rust.
Fritz polish takes off light/med rust.
They have wire wheels for rust bluing. It's soft but removes light rust.

Ammonia based cleaners like Blue Wonder and fine steel wool will effectively kill rust with out harming the bluing +1 I was surprised to see how well Blue Wonder gets rust off a blued gun part without harming the finish.

Kroil Oil also will do wonders on a much neglected gun
