Ive got the opportunity to hunt KS next year. Archery or Rifle. I would prefer to hunt archery as it is going to be cheaper and I hate rifle hunting. So, leads to this question...How hard is it to get drawn in KS for a non resident his 1st time to apply for archery?

you can go to Kansas Wildlife Department website for draw stats on the different units. Plus if you are worried about getting the unit you want you can draw for a less competetive adjacent unit, or sometimes they have leftover tags, and list the unit you want to hunt as your secondary. Their website is pretty helpful. If you've never been, I would highly recommend it. This was my first year and I loved it. I would for sure go for archery.

It is a lot easier than it used to be. You will probably draw your first year.

I traveled thru a lot of Unit 17 to get to Unit 2 to hunt Nonresident Muzzleloader Mule Deer (which was good for Whitetail aslo). Only 42 nonres permits drawn for the Unit and it was good for Unit 2 and 17 both. Unit 17 is pretty dang open farm/rangeland. Unit 2 is almost wide open with only trees along the rivers. The drought has hit the western part of Kansas hard the last 2 yrs and worst was this year. Wallace County had less than 3" of rain this year, some areas less and some a little more. Deer were off this year really bad. Cover for them to hide in is standing crops or rolling ranch land with yuccas and grass. There was no cover to be found on CRP or ranchland due to drought. Most of the creeks and rivers I crossed were dry. Water was really an issue for wildlife in a lot of areas. Standing crops went to cattle grazing most of the time. Harvested cropland went to cattle grazing a lot this year. They have planted some wheat dryland and irrigated and it all needs rain really bad.
Here is what Wallace County looked like where I hunted.

Just keep in mind, the rifle season is only 12 days, where bow season starts around the middle of Sept and runs till the end of Dec and it also runs during the rut.

Yeah, several out of my group went for rifle season this year. That is how we got in with the owner for next year. They mainly hunt unit 5 but he does have a few properties on the eastern side of unit 17. They saw some really big deer this year. They were all seen after dark on the roads though. There was a 165" killed and several 140's but nothing too crazy.

I will research the draw and see how it looks. Thanks so much for the help.

There are big deer in Kansas. Really big. But don't just think because you draw a permit that they will be one waiting just for you. But, there were many smaller bucks killed in the area I was hunting. I did see on huge 6x6 WT in standing corn and even got a shot at him with my ML but just barely nicked him. I watched him walk and trot off for about a mile over the horizon on land I had no access to.

I hunt Pike County every year. I know what is there and that it is hunting and not killing. I will do my work and give it 110%. I have never hunted KS and I want to and it looks like I am going to. I just have to figure out whether I want to do it with a gun or bow. I know I can get drawn with a gun. It is archery that I am concerned about.

Looks like they had 4000 left over tags last year. I hope it is similar this year.

Unit 5 had 596 permits available last year and 695 applied
Unit 17 had 534 permits available and 600 applied.

Looks like if you put in for the draw, you have a very good chance

I chose muzzleloader since it gives you 2 chances. One in the early ML season at the end of Sept then agatn during rifle season but with the ML again. Mule Deer permits are hard to get since you have to draw a WT permit first then re-enter into the MD permit drawing. I really like the challenge of hunting open terrain. I made a trip out in August to scout and see the terrain that helped when I looked at Google Earth to see how the areas I was hunting looked. That trip paid off for me when I started hunting in Sept.

Number of permits are the same for the Unit, doesn't matter if you put in for gun or bow. For example, Unit 17 had 534 tags. 238 went to Firearms, 184 went to archery and 112 went to muzzle loader.

I hunt in SE Kansas with a bow and love it. It is different and the deer are different than most Texas deer I have hunted. Hardest part is the distance and limitations on scouting.

Here is a link to the KDWP and if you click on the "2012 Nonresident Deer Draw Stats Report" at the bottom of the chart it will take you to all the management areas and numbers for nonres.

That link can get you to the rest of their website. Lot of info on there also if you search you can find the Top 10 of each species of big game animals by weapon used. Pretty interesting to see what was killed and by whom and where.
