Got to say, I'm a sorry wingshot. Never did much other than ducks. Where, or to whom, should I go for some professional help?
Thanks

Sporting Clays.. again and again and.....

You might be able to get the trapper to watch and tell you about anything glaring he see's in your stance and the way you're mounting the gun. A little extra in the tip will make sure he watches.

Couple things... Make sure you are bringing the butt all the way up to your shoulder before pulling the trigger..Both eyes open and.. swing swing swing. Follow through and dont stop when you shoot but push past along the line your target would be on if you missed it.

Ok.. so that's three...

Clays are great but lets walk before we run! Start with Skeet! Get your bugs worked out. Shoulder that gun, get on target, squeeze and follow through!! Do this over and over and over. Once you have Skeet down, move to clays. I tell ya, even if you are good on the range, it might all go out the window when the ducks come in feet down....

I like to play a little game we call 'September Morning' or trappers choice. As soon as you bring the gun up to your shoulder he pulls whichever bird he wants.

Keeps things interesting.

But yeah. Brain vapor lock happens. Especially on that first big flock of the season.. 'oohhh preeetttyyy' 'What are you waiting for!? TAKE EM!!'..

there are some good shooters at the local ranges and some will help and others due get payed to teach. i would call elm fork as there seems to be a great place to shoot and the shotguners hang around there.skeet, trap and sporting clays are a good tool but you need to be tought the basics. a good teacher will not change the way you shoot unless you are so far out of whack they cant correct it. they will work on you with the way you shoot and help you learn the shoulder, head, hips, general body form that will work with your style. i am not great at the range and i have a strange stance but as long as i shoot high 80s i will stay with my style. when it comes to dove and quail i bust them all day, but duck hunting i cant remember that i am there to shoot and not watch. so i call it brain freeze or lost in the moment. but call around to the local places and see if they have a shooter on staff, if not they will know sombody.

The purpose of a warrior is not to reason with the enemy but to kill him.

Thanks fellas. I guess Elm Fork is about the only game in town, so I'll give them a call.

My suggestion rather than paying would be to go shoot with a buddy who is a good shot one day. Practice will help a lot. It could be the gun doesn't fit right or you aren't getting a consistent mount. Have you ever checked eye dominance? Those are a lot of things a decent shooter can talk to you about and then just by standing behind and watching you shoot they can let you know what your doing. Behind, high or what. Before spending money just get with someone that can shoot. It could make a world of difference.

Practice is good, very good, but you need to practice the right way. Just like golf, if you start practicing with bad habits, you just practice the wrong way and you won't really get any better, plus the bad habits get worse. You need to have someone, ( a teacher, trainer,instructor.etc.) observe you while you are shooting, so he/she can make corrections. Some of the suggestions above about going to a range where they have instructors, is a good one. Also, there is a guy that goes to a lot of these hunting shows(like in Ft. Worth in August), that has a motto "shoot where you look" and it may even be the name of his website. I have heard good things about him. I took some lessons from a pro shooter a few years ago and went from 3-4 boxes for a limit of doves to 2-3 boxes. IT HELPS!!!
Good luck!

That is the name I was trying to remember. My brother did some work for Pete while working at the Dallas Gun Club.

...and remember don't shoulder your gun; pull your gun to your cheek. If it is the right length for you, It will naturally sit on your shoulder right. This also ensures you are looking right down the barrell. (works for me at least)

SeaT,

http://www.backwoodstraps.com/

Check them out as well. They are on 380, past the 289 going from your place. My son and I shot there many times on their pull-it-yourself clay machine. I also shot on their skeet range to humble myself. They do have pro's there that you can take lesson from.

So far for myself, I need more practice and more practice. I have not taken a lesson yet. But from my performance on the skeet range, it just a matter of time.

Good luck SeaT.

CDC, I know ya.
Thanks.
I'll look that way.
Did take a lesson at Elm Fork (and bought a new gun as a result). Loved it. But still need all the help I can get.
