My son is a bit over 5 years old and went with me on his first deer hunt this past weekend. We left Austin headed for a ranch my extended family ownes near Sugarland. It is over 400 acres and usually covered with deer. However, when we got there and went out to check the feeders we found corn under all of them. With all the acorns on the ground and the weather warmer then usual the deer seemed content to stay bedded down and back inside the cover. Even the hogs were not coming to the corn with plenty of natural food to be had. Around mid day we headed back to their house for lunch and a little relaxation with the idea of going back out in the Kubota around 4pm to see if we could jump something or catch them moving before dark. Around 4 we went back out hit every trail on the place and only saw one fawn. With darkness coming fast we figured we would be up early on Sunday to try again and we started back to the house. But, as it turned out things changed only a couple minutes later. We came around a bend in the road and 3 deer were moving about 125 yards ahead of us. We were there to take a doe to fill the freezer, but that changed when one of them was a 2.5 y/o cull they have been trying to get. I jumped out, used the window as a rest for the 30.06 and let 165 grains fly. It wasn't a perfect shot as I got him a bit low and farther back then I wanted, but he walked 10 - 12 steps and went down just inside the brush line.

All in all it was a great weekend and i'm looking forward to going back again the last weekend of the season

The condition you decribe with corn on the ground and deer not moving seems to also prevail in central Tx and the Hill Country this year. The deer and hogs seem to prefer acorns and pecans over corn. There has not been enough rain since October 1 to sour the acorns.
