My 6 year old yellow lab is going under the knife tomorrow. I posted about her injury roughly 5 weeks ago. She tore her ACL in her knee and the only option is surgery for her. My vet said she will be walking on it within 10 days and should be ready to hunt for duck season. Just thought I would post it and also see if anyone has gone through this.

She was just running after her dummy one day. Nothing strange happened, but she just came back limping. My vet told me this happens a lot these days since dogs have gotten bigger over the past 10-15 years.

Did your vet say there was anything you could do to help prevent it? I don't let my dog jump down out of the truck because I've heard stories of dogs hurting themselves. I also warm my dog up prior to any training, hunting or hunt tests. Didn't know if there was anything else I needed to do.

I’ve had this happen to 2 Boxers. One had both back legs repaired. The recovery time is about 2 weeks. Follow your doctor’s instructions, but from my experience you really need to keep them on a leash or in a kennel for the first week. The second week was outside only on a leash and walking or lying in the house all other times.

You can start taking him for a walk on the third week and ease them into more activity like playful runs after that. I wouldn’t want a full out/ flat out run out of my dog for 5-6 weeks.

My Vet said there was not much you could do to prevent it. In both of my dogs it happened while they were running and playing in the back yard or jumping at the fence because of something behind it.

My vet said the same thing, not much to prevent it. Although taking some precautions couldnt hurt either.

My vet called a little bit ago to say the surgery went as planned. Now the recovery begins.

Good luck on the recovery, we have gone through 3 of the 4 back legs on our 11 year old mutts. They did it just in their normal routine. Even for their advanced years they did fine. The first week was a little tough as we had to keep them still. We have had no lingering effects and the first knee went a couple of years ago.
