Alright, I am looking into buying another AR-15 sometime between now and September! Right now I have a Colt with 20" barrel, and I am looking at buying a carbine model with a 16" barrel to go with it!

The three brands I am looking at are the Colt, Armalite, and Bushmaster!

My question is which one do yall consider the best, or are they all about the same?

I am very happy with my Colt, but I am a real dumb azz when it comes to AR's so any help yall can provide is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Why get another .223? Try one of the other fun uppers available!

7.62 x39
.300 Whisper
.458 Socom
.50 Beowulf
6.8 SPC
6.5 Grendel

I'd put Colt, Armalite, and Bushmaster all up in the top tier of quality for your run of the mill AR.

Build your own, you'll enjoy it more.

I have given the Beowulf some thought, but I think I want to keep it simple and stick with something I can afford to shoot a little bit! If I do stray away from the 223 then I will most likely go for the AR-10 308!

I aint even going to try to build my own!!! Heck I can hardly take the one I have apart as it is!

Theres a heck of a deal on a bushmaster for sale in the classifeds, 16 inch barrel.

Have you ever shot a rock river?

If not and you want to let me know.

Just my opion, and opion is all. Right now Rock River is making the best AR. Very smooth and reliable. I carry a M16(department issue) but do intend to go with a Rock, when funds become available.

I have never shot a Rock River. I have heard of them, but not much. But then again I am not really into the Black Rifle thing enough to know much about anything!

I appreciate your offer to let me shoot yours, but honestly I would not know a good one from a bad one as long as go bang when I pull the trigger! The only reason I did not include the RRA in my choices is because I considered the Colt, Armalite, and Bushmaster the top 3 that I have heard of and figured I could not go wrong with any of those!

If yall honestly think the RRA is better than the 3 I am looking at, then I will dang sure take a look at them! Firearms are something I never try to get out as cheap as I can, but I do try to get the most for my money without going overboard!

I saw the Bushmaster in the classifieds, but I aint in too big of hurry to buy one right now! I just started looking yesterday, and as long as I have it by mid-September then I will be fine!

Thanks yall!

Anyone else have something to add?

Why do yall feel the Rock River is better than the others?

To be honest you just need to shoot one.

The Two Stage Trigger is SWEET and it has a VERY SMOOTH ACTION!

Cheeper than Colt and in the price range of all the others.

I go Zero once a month at the Garland Range,

I may even pull out the AR50.
Its a bolt action, have you looked into one of them, the recoil is like a .243

I just bought my first AR (Stag Model 2 from Ammo Depot)...Before purchasing the rifle, I read every article, review and what seemed to thousands of post from AR15.com and this forum. What I discovered by doing my research is that everyone has plenty of opinions on which company makes the best weapon. I'd do my research, find a gun that meets your needs, as well as your budget and then pull the trigger (no pun intended).

Chevys, Fords, Dodges, stick with one of the main mfg's and you cant go wrong, Mine a S&W, M&P and i love it, never any problems, and no it dosn't ride in the trunk in a nice padded case, it rides muzzle down in the kubota rtv, or in the rack i built for the 1964 model international 826, that i rake and bale hay with, all while shooting the cheapo monarch $5.29 a box ammo from academy when i do spook up a yote or a bunch of hogs. I actually looked into buying one of them a few years back when I was at Cabelas! I just could not justify tuning loose of $3K at the time!

I shoot a Double Star upper and lower. I've put ~800 rounds through it without a single hiccup. Some of it was the crappiest ammo you can buy. My only caution is that when you wander into some of the other calibers (especially the .50), ammo prices may take some of the fun out of plinking.

Practice makes permanent.

I have a DPMS, and have shot well over 5000 rounds(probably a lot more than that) through it, and have had no problems. I reload, so I can load 1000 rounds for under a 100 dollars.

Wow, 1,000 rnds for under $100.00!!! I just got myself a new CMMG AR-15 and was getting together the reloading dies, etc that I'm gonna need. Can you tell me what components you're using for the $100/1000 loads in your 223? I have been lookin at winchester FMJ bullets, remington brass, IMR 4064 powder, and Federal small rifle primers. Best I can calculate, It's gonna run me around $200/1000 to reload that combination.

Price went up a little, but it should still be close to 100. I buy these bullets http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...&hasJS=true
almost 80 bucks now for 1000, then 1000 primers is about 20 bucks. I by 8 lbs of powder at a time, usually from shotgun news, when ever I can find it on sale. I think I paid 60 bucks for each 8 lbs powder last time I ordered, I can load almost 2500 rounds with 8 lbs. So what ever the going rate for powder is you can fiqure that out. I still have about 24 lbs of powder, so I won't be buying any for a while.

I bought about 4k rounds of once fired brass years ago, don't remember what I paid for them though.

Thanks, I checked out the link. That will save me some $$$. What powder are you using, and how much does it set you back when you buy it 8 lbs. at a time? At present, I'm looking at IMR 4064, and a 1 lb. can is $22.95 + tax at Sportsmans Whse. here in Colorado.

It has been a while since I bought powder, I bought 5 8lb containers. I am using the BLC-2, and I like it alot. Don't use H4198, H335, I had lots of trouble with powders. Auto loading .223's won't cycle on lots of the powders listed for the .223. I used the IMR 4064 before, but can't remember if I had cycling problems or not. I know the BLC-2 works. It has something to do with the speed the powder burns. It won't allow the bolt to cycle far enough to load another round.

Hey, Thanks for the tip. I was planning on using the IMR 4064 'cause that is what I've been loading for some of my other rifles for years. That would mean having to store one less powder around the house & several of my reload manuals listed it for the 223. However, You are correct; I went back and looked at each of them. Not a single manual lists an AR as their test rifle. Every one of them was using a bolt action. Even though I've reloaded alot for several different centerfire rifles, I've yet to reload anything for my AR-15 & what you're saying makes sense. My Son gave me about 4,000 rnds of factory loaded ammo when I got the gun so this will be my first attempt at working something up for it. Do you know what manual or manuals list load data for the AR-15 with the BLC-2 powder?

Thanks again for the tip,
LlindeX

No, I am just using the .223 load data, and going for minimum powder for my plinking rounds. It makes the powder go further, and I don't notice any negative side effects.
