so the past few times ive been at the lease, (weekend before this past one was the last time) there have been new rubs all in the same area that i hunt. and i dont mean on little trees either. the smallest tree is probably 3 inches. My question is does rubs have anythign to do with the rut still going, or starting, etc? i sure woudl like to see the buck that is doing this.

Bucks will rub as long as they have their antlers. After shedding velvet, most rubs are dominance and territory related.

I have always heard that big rubs mean big bucks. My game cams have disproved that.

The rut imo pretty much never ends until feb. the first heavy seeking and chasing phases is what most people call the rut. this is when every buck is healthy and is itching to chase those doe for the first time. then when it seems like it just comes to a hault around now for are area usualy. is just the second phase that is the lockdown. thats when every buck has paired with a doe and wont leave her site until the deed is done...when a doe gets close to standing heat their home range gets very small and you may not see them for a good while. then there is just a bit of a break while inbetween cycles but then the bucks are back to searching for those doe that will be cycling soon enough. Id say your in a good spot and would just hold tight. You got some cameras up on it?

Good place to find some sheds later also. Seen bucks knock em off in late season still hitting the rubs.

It also could mean that your lease partners have been at it with a wood rasp....
I heard tell of few guys doing that to a lease partner... that poor sob hunted harder and longer than he had ever hunted that year, but still did not come away with a trophy...

bucks will use the same trees to rub ..... and bucks will visit the same scrapes ...... i watched 5 different bucks one morning ...all little fellas ...walk by 15 or 20 minutes apart and everyone of them tried his best to destroy this lil tree ..... when they were done it looked like a monster had been there and tore up that tree .... now about the larger tree thing .....if its really really large ... like 7 or 8 inches in dia. or larger and it has several years worth of rubs ,,,,,, it is likely a mature buck is visiting that tree .... and lots of big rubs in a small area needs to carefully hunted .....you are probably close to a mature bucks "core" area
