This thread makes me feel alot better about myself!
I clean it after the seasons are completely over, but not during them...

I throw my gun it in the mud and completely disrespect it... When it starts jamming then I clean it. I'm cleaning it tonight. Make sure you clean the magazine tube out good this time

Alright already! I broke down the bang stick today and cleaned it. I can't have it hangin up on the opener. I have worked on my tractor and not been that dirty afterwards. Kind of glad I did it.

During the hunt my poor gun goes through hell and back. She does get a good wipe down after the hunt. Maybe a little oil. During the spilt and after the season it gets the delux cleaning.
We interrupt this marriage for hunting season.

It's so easy to strip the maxus down, that I end up doing it every couple weeks. Whenever I sit down with my cleaning kit to run the snake through, next thing I know I've stripped her all the way down.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hesitate to do anything I need to do because I'm babying the gun, but at the same time, I'm not trying to rag her out.

The only cleaning is oil. I've never taken a gun apart and cleaned the inside. +1

Great thread. My gun is to destroy clays and kill birds, period. It is not an investment, trophy or stuffed animail. I use it heavily. I don't try to destroy it, but I don't baby it either. It usually gets dirty as heck when I am hunting and that is okay with me.
Now, before I got out, I spray the outside of it with WD-40 to prevent rust "if" I get it wet and don't have time to clean it right away. 99% of the time, I clean my gun when I get home. I do not like to pull the trigger and no "boom".
So, I guess I am an "abuser" in the field and a "babyR" at the house.

Usually clean the vinci once a week if im hunting hard. I dont try to abuse it at all but it does happen. No reason to disrespect a gift that cost that much but to each is his own.

Last thing I do before the opener is clean my gun. First thing I do at the close is clean my gun. In between all I do is wipe them down and spray a little WD-40 into the action and down the barrel. I know people that say that is the worst thing you can do but that is what my Grandad and Dad taught me to do and I still do it as a way of remembering them. NEVER had a shotgun fail me. But then again when you shoot Winchester Model 12's you are not going to have any problems.
You can have your fancy 1,000.oo guns, give me a Winchester Model 12 any day. But then again those Model 12's are starting to get close to being worth 1,000 in value since Winchester stopped making them.

When I duck hunted... abuser. Lots of water was normal. Mud wasnt uncomon. The 870 is tuff. When I got back to the truck get a rag, old sock or paper towel from (insert fast food joint here) I would dump some motor oil out of the quart I kept behind the seat whipe it down and back in the case, never had a problem, and not really even that much rust.

Now THAT is old school. I LOVE it. 870 is another classic gun.
Bet you drive a Chevy? In my experience most Chevy guys had 870's and most Ford guys used Model 12's.
In my house growing up and now as the dad it is Winchester shotguns and Ford Trucks. LOL

I've always been a baby-er. I don't worry about keeping a shotgun clean in the field beyond hitting it with WD-40 or the like (particularly after exposure to salt) but after the birds are broken down and in the fridge/freezer the shotgun gets some attention before being cased. No rust, no malfunctions. Like you said, a useful and expensive piece of metal warrants some maintenance in my book.

I keep mine clean and take care of them. I realize that folks that spend the their money on their guns can do what they want with them, but I find someone who doesn't take care of their guns probably don't take care of anything else in their lives. Kind of sad really. Wouldn't want anyone like that to work for me. Each to their own I guess.

Clean the outside more than the inside ! Inside gets a little oil and barrel might get slightly cleaned once a year

I clean my guns reagularly clean the barrel out alot. but only because i am very hard on them... i will not own a gun that needs to be pampered to keep shooting right...rust is a normal color on all my blued rifles. Ran over my .17 before...dropped my A500 in the mud i dnt know how many times...my poor savage old model 110 .270 has been treated the worst....and it still shoots like a dream.

I clean my SBE2 only when needed. Needed is defined as the internal parts getting wet or dirty/muddy. Synthetic stock and dipped I don't get worried about a little mud on the outside.
After the season or if I hunt the coast it gets completely broken down and oiled up real good.
But I am careful where and how I lay it down. It isn't just tossed in the back of the truck or used as an oar.

Ill make sure and loose some sleep over that... i never sale my guns... no need to sale something that still preforms just as good as a pretty new one. A gun is a tool to me and i will treat it like one. Would you by any chance have a 4wd that you never went off road with...
