That doesn't help my particular situation, but it was a very entertaining story nonetheless.

I was kinda trying to show you that even though I was scared, that I didnt need a gun my voice was enough to scare the hell out of a bunch of pigs.

Well what should you be scared of anyways. Nothing is gonna mess with a big ole gorilla anyways... peep

I have hunted SHNF for 30 years and I know when I started there was a few time I felt like you do. The more times you go in & out you will get more confortable with your surroundings the better you will feel. Try going in just a little bit earlier and stay out a littler longer and before you know it, it will not bother you at all. And believe it or not after awhile when you’re walking in before daylight and you hear something you will get excited in a good way.

George you are more man than most to post what you did. We all have our thing I guess. My son who is 14 now walks through the woods all the time in the middle of the night by himself and never thinks twice but if he sees a copperhead he's gone, running screaming, I don't get it. I will say this I catch all snakes, pigs with dogs, hunt by my self at night all night, nothing really scares me except...........freaking bees. I can't do it, I can't stand there and look at one, I run I'll knock over little kids and old ladies, I don't care, I ain't sticking around but I try over and over to get passed it and the more I've worked the better its gotten so just keep working at it its all in your head brotha. It's your brain you control it dont let it control you.

Everybody's scared of something. Don't obsess over it and don't let it control you. For me, it was heights. At least for me, the best way to get over the fear was making myself do whatever I was afraid of. Repeatedly. Got a job ironworking when I was young. It was hairy for awhile, but I was gradually desensitized to heights.

God is so good to me.

Ill be straight up honest and admit that I quit reading your post after you got to the point, and quit reading comments after you were called a nancy boy rofl

But in all seriousness, my dad and brothers broke me of my fear of the darkness when I was about 7-8 years old. They scared the living **** out of me over and over until I didn't care anymore about the darkness. There are still times where I worry about snakes (I HATE those bastages), but other than that, to me there is nothing more peaceful and serene as being in a forest at night when all you hear are the sounds of nature. I love hearing yotes howling, but that's probably because I was raised by a fox/coyote hunting fanatic. I just love getting out of the city, out away from the lights and hustle/bustle, and enjoying the darkness.

It's also the place I've had some of my greatest talks with The Creator...it brings a peace like nothing else can, and worries seem to disappear for a little while up

I get a little creeped out myself sometimes, you just have to stop, take a deep breath and get a hold of yourself. The woods are exactly the same at night as they are during the daytime. There are no boogers that are going to get you.

You might want to try and enjoy the woods at night stay positive and work at it. The more you poke around at night the less inhibitions you will have, you have never let yourself get use to the dark woods so everything is still mysterious and foreboding.

When I started reading the OP, I thought he was giving his pedigree for a dating site. grin roflmao

I can admit to a mild case of uneasiness sometimes when walking in or out, but yours sounds like a full on panic attack.

Put your man panties on and sack up. You are the only thing in the woods with a loaded weapon.....well except for a skunk. grin

LOL x 10. Man you have cracked me up the last 4 pages. You have more wit and tact than most! up

Once I trusted Jesus as my personal savior, every real fear I had ever known vanished. Knowing that my finite earthly life can be taken at any moment by man or beast does not bother me anymore. The *everlasting* life after this is the one that matters. And God has promised that he will "vanquish every fear" we have ever had if we choose to join him. up

Nevertheless, my .40 stays in the small of my back most anywhere I go. I will fight for life and against those booger men and armadillos who try to wrongly take it. flag

UIBA and grammar snob are two different folks around here. As far as I know the grammar snob position is still open. I imagine with a few well pointed corrections and rants about your/you're, their/they're, to/too/two etc. you just may get the job!! banana

Lots of good info here. There are many ways to overcome fears. The reality is that fear can be useful. It's just your natural instinct to survive. That's what makes animals hard to kill. They're not smart but their instincts are incredible. It's just about getting in tune with your instincts and environment. Yours will become that way too. The more time in the woods the better they get. Think about all the 18 yr old kids in some foreign country with people who want to kill them. They're scared but with good reason. The only way I got through the first month overseas was my training. I totally agree with the folks who suggested some baby steps in the dark. Once you realize you can do it and you'll be fine your instincts and sidearm will keep you safe. Good luck.

I've been hunting for 30 years. I started hunting by myself when I was 12. Back then we hunted on a lease in Chester, Tx. It was seven miles back and in four wheel drive the entire way on the dirt (mud) road. No power or water and camped in tents. I remember my stand, which was a 2x12 in a tree, was 3/4 of a mile away from camp. I remember being sooo scared. After a while that fright decreased to where now I walk to the stand without my flashlight on.

One thing I started telling myself is I have never heard of anyone I knew get attacked by anything walking to their stand. Everything out there is more afraid of you than you are of it.
