Well we headed to the deer lease after eating Thanksgiving with my dad.. My son who is 11 has been hunting with me for 6 yrs now. He is my #1 hunting buddy and loves being in the woods. We have been hunting this year for his 1st buck. Its been hit and miss with finding the right buck, we were looking for a good management buck.. But i made up my mind on this trip that my hunting buddy was getting a buck no matter what.. Our hunt started Friday morning.. It was very windy, we had 10 does and 4 bucks come to the feeder only to leave very quickly. My dad who was sitting in a stand about 70 yards from us started rattling around 8:30 am.. We had 2 more bucks come charging in but would not stay long enough for my son to get a good shot.. Friday afternoon we got in the stand right at 2pm. Around 3:30 we had our first few deer come in, 4 does.. About 20 minutes later a really large 9 point come running in and chasing them around. After about 15 minutes of chasing does he finally ran off chasing a hot doe. About 45 minutes later a spike came in to the feeder, but he left as fast as he came in.. At 4:45 pm a small 8 point buck came to the feeder. This was his buck, i asked my son if he wanted to take this buck , he said yes please dad.. About 2 minutes of watching i decided to let him take this buck. Now my son has been going to the range for a year, usually shooting at 100 yards. We were in a double bull blind with no rest and the feeder was 121 yards away. I got the shooting sticks out helped him get the rifle set, he watched the buck for about 3 minutes all the while he was shaking and saying that buck is huge dad.. It seemed like forever for the buck to give us a broad side shot.. I was shaking so bad i could not hold my bino's still, this was the moment we both have spent a year planning for. Finally the buck turned and gave us the shot we wanted, i flipped the safety off the gun and told my son take your time and take him when you are ready. About 2 sec later his buck hit the ground. A perfect heart shot, the buck did not move an inch.. As soon as he saw the buck hit the ground he screamed I GOT HIM HE IS DOWN.. My son almost dropped the gun to give me a huge hug, lots of high 5's and a few more hugs later we took that long walk to the feeder. There lay my son's 1st buck, a 2 yr old 8 point with a 10 inch spread, but to my boy it was the biggest buck he has ever seen. At this point i could care less if i ever shoot another deer again, this was the most exciting hunt i have been on.. It's really weird i have hunted big white tail bucks all over the country and this little 8 point buck had me shaking like the next state record. I am so proud of my boy, and really happy that my dad his grandpa could be there for this.. Its the best feeling in the world to watch your kid take there first buck.. I feel sorry for the deer in the state, because my boy is hooked now.. Here are a couple of pictures.. Enjoy ( time is not correct on the pictures.) Also our lease is in Coleman County..

Proud Grandpa with the happy hunter

My son and I..

What a great story. It's awesome that 3 generations got to be there.

Congratulations to your son!

When he was young, I told Dale Jr. that hunting and racing are a lot alike. Holding that steering wheel and holding that rifle both mean you better be responsible.
