I got a 10 point that I swear has to be 14" or wider inside but looks like he has really big ears.....

Do what???? Thee have to be wider than 13" , it's just says a good way to tell is if it's wider than his ears in the alert position.... Like that's a good rule of thumb.... Surely all bucks ears aren't 13" wide

The measurement is more of an approximate.

The answer is yes. I killed a nine that had ears 16" at alert.

Need to be sure it's a mature animal though. I think a mature buck might average 15" at alert. As a matter of fact a few biologists I've spoken to have told me this.

Check the Mississippi guide they call it 15 inches. Don't think there would be a big difference. That is closer to reality with deer I have shot.

Yes it is possible. Depends on the body size. It is just a rule of thumb to go by.

Any larger bodied deer is going to be greater than 13 inches in the prone position unless it has just goofy tiny ears.

I have at least two mature to post-mature bucks on my place that would meet AR's.

I think TPWD basis it off of hill country deer which are obviously smaller than most others.

Deer on the left is 15"

Yes, it is possible but more so on mature deer than young deer.

Not sarcasm, Wait till they are twenty or bigger and you'll have more big bucks and won't have to worry about it. Rattling will bring the really big one if your scent is covered well enough. Just don't over do it. All deer are inquisitive, big bucks are very territorial and will come to see who's fighting and over what?

the measurement is taken from when the ears are in alert position not just sitting to the side

Most whitetails will never make it to 20" wide even at full maturity.
