Today started as many on this lease; sitting in the blind and not seeing anything. After taking off work last week and never seeing a deer, I decided to get up high and hopefully catch something moving around, so I leave the blind around 8 and head for the tallest mesa outcrop on the place and am just able to spot a buck and doe bedding down 6 mesas away on the complete other side of the ranch. I made my move, jumped in the truck and hauled it the long way around to a road that came out on a mesa just beyond where I though I had saw the deer bed. I crawl out on the mesa and 2 deer jump up out of the tall grass; a buck and a doe. Never did get a good look at the buck until he was a ways out, but he was nothing impressive. Now content on filling a doe tag with this doe that is still staring at me 160 yards out, i swing the scope over to her. To my shock, to her side lays another buck. All I see are the crab claws and a huge neck, center my scope on his white patch and squeeze off the .25-06.
Not my biggest by far, but he's got character, and the way it all unfolded was truly memorable. Too bad I was the only person hunting and nobody could take a picture of my ugly mug with him.
