I am going on a 3 day hunt and i'm allowed 1 buck and 1 doe (evening, morning, evening, morning) and I'm curious to know how you guys decide whether to take the decent 8 point that's in front of you, or hold off on the chance that you might see something better

This is probably the only hunt i'll have this year... it's very tempting to take a respectable buck when it shows up, but it's tragic when you see a 10 point a few hours later that you can't shoot.

A bird in the hand is worth more than 2 in the bush.

If it's a deer you'd be proud to have and meets the criteria you have set as far as age and score then take it. If you leave it and don't see another this year then there's always next year. If you're on a meat hunt then it won't matter. Just shoot the first legal one you see. If you're horn hunting then that's just the risk you take.

don't be afraid to shoot something on the first day, that you would be happy with on the last day.

I passed on a really good 8 pt last year, because I had seen a 10 pt just before that and I wanted to take the 10. I let the 8 walk, and the 10 never showed up. That taught me a lesson. If I see a good deer, I am not about to pass him up in the hopes a bigger one might come by later.

The bird in hand rule is a good one. Two years ago I went to Illinois looking to take a bruiser. We saw lots of big rubs and I was excited for the 3 day shotgun season. During the first hour I rattled in a 7pt with short brows even though his body was big as a horse and I passed. I rattled him in again an hour later. I passed again thinking I would have a chance at a bigger one. He was the only buck that I had a chance to shoot the whole trip. Came back to Texas empty handed.

I just look for the number on the ear tag. My guide usually tells me which number I paid for, and what time he likes to eat dinner.

There comes a point in most hunters' lives when the overall hunting experience becomes more important than the taking of a trophy. When you arrive at that point, you'll enjoy the hunt more.

In your case, if you look at this hunt as being, "I gotta take 1 buck and 1 doe because that's what I paid for," then you have set yourself up for a possibly bitter experience if you don't harvest the biggest buck you see.

I would suggest that you shoot the first healthy doe you see. You can let her lie a for a bit while you continue to look for a buck. Now you have your venison. Going forward, just relax and enjoy nature, and if you come home with a nice trophy, great. If you get skunked, then you have the memories, which I'm telling you are just as nice.

Buck: Is he old enough? Is he big enough? Is he a cull, management or trophy?

Does: Old mature does are preferable but a young 'un will do fine.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Agree, if you have to debate that a deer is big enough or old enough it probably is not. Enjoy the hunt and remember it is hunting not just harvesting. Learn to enjoy the full experience and like they said it is more rewarding.
