I will be bringing a new pup home around the holidays (Lab) and wanted some suggestions on what brands of food you guys recommend. My last Lab I fed Iams until he was almost one and Eukanuba the remainder of his life. I know there is a ton of stuff out there. Any suggestions appreciated.

I feed Orijen. It's more expensive but you'll notice that you feed them less to keep them at their desired weight. The cheap stuff has more filler that the dog just wastes anyway.

I feed my 75lb lab/Weim mix 1 cup twice a day.

I would get grain-free at a minimum.

Feed Black Gold and don't worry about breaking the bank. I feed my hounds the 26-19 Performance Blend and hunt them 3-4 times a week. I feed two cups in the warm months and three cups through the winter to my 50-60 pound dogs. Very little waste and hair coats are slick.
Adios,
Gary

You might also check out Taste of the wild, it's rated really high and we feed our three boxers it with no issues. Our oldest male has skin allergies and is doing a lot better on it than blue wild or blue buffalo grain free. Its a pretty high rated food.

Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No Ol' Roy. That's the worst dog food going.

For a really good premium dog food at an affordable price, we feed Diamond Naturals. It's less than a .90 cents per pound. We feed 80# per week and are not breaking the bank. Plus, you can get it at any Tractor Supply.

You may pay more for a dog food, but the dogs will eat less because there is more nutritional value. Just stay away from anything with corn in it.

I guess it's kinda strange that dogs as a species ever survived the 70's and 80's. Cause all the dog foods used to have the cerial fillers back when. They did survive and maybe we have learned a bit about dog nutrition and digestion. Personally I like feeding my dogs well, but I also have a budget. I have tried a bunch of brands and Price per pound I think it is real hard to beat the Tractor Supply 4 Health dog foods.

We get dogfood at TSC. We will buy one good bag and one cheap bag and mix it. All the dogs like that.

Canidea is hard to beat for the price and quality. Similar to the other high quality feed mentioned but the cheapest of them.

I feed mine the Blue Buffalo Wilderness and he will lick the bowl clean unless it is the pick can they have....then he will sniff it and look at me sideways and go steal something somewhere else. The priest i am staying with feeds his Natural Select i think its called. It looks like a salami on steroids and is usually found in the refrigerated section at some petsmarts. When mine is in the mood to steal, this is what he will steal. He did not care for the Eukanuba at all though. i think it will just take a bit of trial and error to find what he likes. But also, i would suggest giving him what you want to early and he will get used to it if there is nothing else around.

You should feed dogs raw lamb, chicken and beef with dessert being quail & fawn. According to most THF members that is all coyotes eat, they never visit a vet and stay outside 365 days a year, have nice coats and are never sick unless they get close to domestic dogs. smile

My Dad used to say that Purina spends more on research than other dog food companies are worth. At the time when I was a kid it might have been true, not so sure anymore.

The only purina I would feed is purina one. However my dogs get blue or innova and they love it.

Parisite: That is still true today. My vet recommends Purina and I feed Pro Plan to my breeders. My other dogs get Diamond Naturals lamb/rice. As previously stated, it is affordable and the dogs love it.
