Shot two doe this morning at about 1030. First at bout 30 yds. Complete pass threw wat looked like right at the lungs. Couldn't find blood at point of impact but doe ran 5 yds stopped and acted like it was about to collapse right then. Ran another 50 yds stopped and did the same. Then took off over a hill. Walked up and found blood at second slot she stopped at but not a trail of it. Walked fence line and no sign of blood there either. Second doe made a bad shot at. Hit right above the back leg and stuck and she took off no blood at all.

Dang man, not a good morning for sure. Hate to ask but when was the last time you checked the sights on your bow?

Since beginning of the year. I've been practicing and everything seems right on target. First doe was a good shot. Just no blood to follow and three different directions she coulda gone over the hill. Second doe, not so good but completely my fault....

If you made a good shot on the first one I would keep looking. I shot a doe and hit the liver and back of one lung and lost the blood trail after about 60 yards. After a couple of hours of fanning out from the last blood, we found her. She was already getting stiff so she died quickly after the shot, she just bled out internally and didn't leave a good blood trail.

Good point. The shot looked spot on. I would have perfered a 15 ud shot, that's how far te feeder is away, but they were stayin away from if and were heading out. The arrow really didn't have any blood on it, any idea why that is?

Get a roll of toilet paper and painstakingly search every blade of grass, every leaf, limb, twig and rock. Every little spot of blood you find mark it with toilet paper that way if you lose the trail you can look back at paper markings and have a reference. Get yourself into a hunting frame of mind and hunt this deer down.

What kind of broadheads? And do use brand new blades out of the pack when.you hunt? This could have lots to do with it, a dull broadhead will leave a very small bloodtrail if any at all.

Sounds weird, but the first arrow I shop was a rage 3 blade, and the second was a NAP fixed blade. I honestly didn't know about the sharpening and them coming dull. I'm even more dissapointef now..

I only use broadheads that have replaceable blades, no matter how much you sharpen it will never be as sharp as when it came out of the box. A dull broadhead will push veins out of the way instead of cutting right through them to cause bleeding. One thing you can try is take a brand new blade out of a pack and one that has been shot a few times, stretch a rubberband between your thumb and index finger and push the blade through, a dull blade will push the rubberband away and a sharp blade will simply slice right through it, same thing with veins and arteries in a deer.

I've been shooting the Magnus Classic broadhead for past several years and it has killed everything it has hit. I shot 3 animals in one day with same head. Coon and pig that morning, sharpened it to where it would shave hair off my arm, and killed a pig with it that afternoon.

Not saying it won't kill, just saying it won't leave as good of a bloodtrail as a brand new razor from the pack.

Okay, if you say so. And it being Thanksgiving and such, don't won't to get into a big debate, but I do have to ask, "What are you basing your opinion on?"

And, I feel bad because the deer I've shot with a resharpened blade didn't know it, because they usually died within 50 yards. Oh well.....

I'm basing my opinion on experience, I'm sure if you put enough effort into sharpening your blade it will be plenty sharp, It was mostly directed into shooting dull blades at animals. You can't say a dull broadhead thats been shot into a target a dozen times will be as effective as a brand new blade or a fresh sharpened one in your case.

I just personally have never got a broadhead sharpened as sharp as it was when it was new, not to say you can't. I'm just more comfortable replacing blades after they have been shot.

Okay, I will agree that a dull blade is a poor decision to use. I guess I took it that only replaceable blades were the best. I've been bowhunting since the mid-70's and basically a firm believer that you should practice as you play and play as you practice, meaning, a month before deer season, I shoot BH's on a daily basis. Saying that, I practice with the same blades I shoot at deer. After pulling them from the target, I will sit in front of the TV for the next several hours working on the blade. If the tip is chipped or broken, then these are designated as practice only, or reserved for coons or pigs.

I've seen way to many people shoot nothing but FP's all season, then head off to the woods with a new package of whatever blades that people tell them to shoot that fly like FP's and you are good to go. Yeah right I say! Where is that BH going to hit, and we will test it after the hunter comes back into camp and tells me that their arrow looked like a knuckleball when they released.

Anyway.....

I agree, I practice with a field point in the off season and then a few weeks before deer season I start practicing with my broadheads, I've only found one fixed broadhead that flies the same and that is a slick trick. I wont use mechanical, I just don't trust them.

Did the arrow smell bad (like feces) like you could have caught the gut?

The arrow didn't smell bad at all. There was little blood though, but you could tell that there was. Thing that gets me is, I really don't think I could of put more of a perfect shot on the first one. I literally thought she was gonna drop after 5 yards the way she was actin. I pray I wake up in the morning and see buzzards in two different spots. At least ill know I woulda put down and not wounded em. That's really eating me up inside right now..

It's obviously impossible for me to know without seeing video of the shot, but I can tell you from experience your mind can play tricks on you as far as where you hit it. I would have bet my paycheck I hit the doe I mentioned earlier tight behind the shoulder because that's what I remembered seeing. When I found her, my actual hit was about 10 inches further back than I thought. Still a lethal shot through the liver, but definitely not what I thought I saw.
Based on what you saw, I would bet the first deer is dead, you just have to keep after it until you find her. Getting back out and looking for her is the only thing that will make you feel any better.

Probably too late to recover your first deer. Bar940 is spot on. In the future remain calm after the shot and visually mark the last place you saw your deer. It may not look the same when you get on the ground but mark what your eyes told you. Now you can go back to your original hit and start putting the puzzle together. Be prepared to track on your hands and knees may take you 4 hours to cover a 100 yards. This is the second hunt for all the marbles. A well hit deer may haul [censored] 100 yards before slowing down....this may be your first good blood sign. My deer just don't drop dead like on TV...always had to track'm down and no I do not always find my deer. But I never spent less than 8 hours of tracking before I left the field. It happens. Good luck on your next hunt.

It could be the shot was not a deadly shot and she will recover. Happens a lot more than some people think.

shooting 2 different bh out yer bow is a bad idea. practice with one kind, then hunt with it( a new bh thats sharp)
why shoot a 2nd deer if ya cant find the 1st one? hate ta bash ya, but thats just awful.

If you had made a good shot on the first one the arrow should have had good blood on it even if there was not much of a blood trail
