Well I don't reload and my question is which .223 round would do best on shots under 100 yds, I know there are varmint rounds and I'm excluding those just trying to use the right bullet for the job task at hand don't know if to use a hp, bthp, etc...

your bthp bullets in 68 and 69 grain fragment bad and have zero penetration. My son took a deer with a 60 grain V-max and it did fine. The V-max is a typically a varmint round, but it holds together very well. I recovered the bullet under the hide of the offside shoulder. It broke both shoulders and the deer only went 35 yards. The only problem with that is there was ZERO blood. Tiny entrance and no exit. I like exit wounds. For this reason, I'd recommend any of your bonded bullets (Nosler Accubond or Hornady Interbond) or solid bullets (Barnes TSX, or Hornady GMX). These will penetrate very well and give good terminal performance.

Federal loads the 223 with the 60gr Nosler Partition. For a factory round that is the best I know of. Still have not recovered one from a deer exits are good IMO.

If you load Barnes, you should load the lighter 55 grain projectile as they are solid copper and will penatrate more than a heavier lead jacketed projectile..Also you bore must be clean for good results..and I mean down to the bbl just the way it was
made..DD

Federal Fusion makes a 62gr sp that is designed to be a deer bullet, I have not used them on any game as of yet, but they make nice tiny groups at 100yds out of my rem 700.

Thanks
Doc

check with some of the custom ammo makers, be sure to tell em what rifle you have and the barrel twist rate if you know it, lots of the 223's out there will not stabilize a 60 or 65 grn bullet. and if you can't hit then no bullet will be good

I have used Remington Factory 55 grain PSP with great results on killing WT's. Readily available at any Walmart, Cabelas, BPS or Academy.

OTC Deer medicine for the .223 I would use offerings ( as long as your firearm likes it) from:

Federal Premium (60g Partition,53/55/62/70g Barnes TSX)

Federal Fusion 62g SP

Winchester 64g Power Points

Winchester Razorback XT 64g

I am sure I've missed a couple more

I would throw the v-max away and get some nosler partitons.

You will sooner or later be disapointed with the v-max. I shot several deer with them, and you dont even get pass throughs on neck and head shots.

You said yourself you wanted to stay away from varmit bullets and use one intended for the task at hand, then why the heck would did you buy v-max? What you think the "V" stands for?

I think he got these:
.223 Remington Hornady Training 55 Grain Jacketed Soft Point 3,600 fps 50 Rounds 80255

Not a v-max. Would probably be 'ok' , but not as good as a TSX.

I shot a not so big doe at 100 yds give or take last year with these. Didn't sound right when it hit, but that is the only deer I've ever shot with a .223. 1 shot to the neck, hit the neck bone and exploded. Not much penetration and no exit - just a golf ball sized hole where it hit. Kind of wonder what would have happened if I had shot her in the shoulder.....

Deer was drt but I definitely don't have much faith now in that bullet for anything much bigger than a coyote.

Shoot. Eat. Repeat.

i think you did well, used this in .22-250 on a LOT of does and a few bucks with 100% success.

Patience is the key

there is a video on youtube of a guy shooting a big aoudad ram with an AR in .223 at 300 yrds (or so). search giant aoudad .223 its a profesional video. I honestly will never see the case just shoot them with something bigger, but Im getting my son a .223 and will have him shoot pigs (appropiate size pigs) with the .223.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oONgBVyXVNQ

this is the comment on you tube
Smith and Wessons Paul Pluff takes a giant Aoudad using an M&P 15 across a large canyon with one of the best shots we've seen in quite a long time as seen on Americana Outdoors.

This ammunition, Dynamic Research Technologies, is designed to cause a colossal amount of damaged compared to any other hollow point or ballistic tip. We routinely shoot larger game, like the Aoudad here, with our .223 rounds. Some include animals like Aoudad, 300+lb wild pigs,Mule Deer, Nilgai, and even Buffalo. Paul Pluff, the shooter in this video, actually shot a Buffalo with the S&W 460 with a 170gr DRT Bullet. It was a 1 shot kill.It was featured in the Dec issue of Gun World Magazine.
