Hey fellows, I was thinking about finding me a CJ7 jeep and was wondering if there is any specific year model that might be better than others or any other thing I need to look out for. Thanks

The 82's and up have the wide trac axles so they are much more stable on and off road. The 86 which is the last year for the CJ is usually considered the best one to find. It will have a Dana 44 rear end which is an improvment over the AMC 20 that was in them for a long time. A lot of people like the V8's and I do too but if it was a factory set up it was usually older unit with a 3 speed tranny or the Quaratrac full time 4x4 system.
Either the 4 or 5 speed transmission is good with the straight 6 but are a little weak for a V8 conversion. Just look for rust on the frame and body. You can find almost anything you can think of in the aftermarket for all of them.

Be prepared to shell out some extra cash for the name. I had an 83 CJ7 that I sold for pennies when times were tight. I still kick myself for that every time I look at them online and see the prices they are going for.

I know you said specifically a CJ-7. But when you are looking don't let someone talk you into a CJ-5! They seem like they have even less room

No, I have a friend with a CJ5. It would be fine for just the deer lease but I plan on using it for more than that. Thanks for the great information !
