I was down deer hunting with a buddy near Bandera this weekend and in between hunts we went and checked out a lake to see if it was holding any ducks. We saw a bunch of greenheads, but also quite a few of these guys. Anyone know what they are? I was thinking some kind of whistling duck, but not quite. Maybe a crossbreed? Just curious what you guys thought they might be.

Ok, just making sure. 3 years ago on my first ever duck hunt I was by myself and right at LST I see what looked like a big duck coming in and shot it and it turned out to be one of these. I had no idea what it was until one day I was at Cabelas in Fort Worth and saw the two they have mounted in the Africa section. I thought that was pretty crazy.

Now bash away cuz I didn't know what I was shooting at the time. lol

Yeah, found this article on them in the Houston Chronicle:

Variety spicing up shoots for waterfowlers

Similar to the Eurasian Collared Doves they don't count against your limit and there's no season on them. They let me get awfully close. Might not even need #2's, Littledog; might be able to swat 'em with a tennis racket!

Nothing to post photos of. Hunting up here on the river sucks with this water level. Going to be a Tuff season for me.

hahahah, I would have had no idea what it was either, but sometimes you have to shoot stuff just for the sake of science.

Nice lookin bird. Buddy of mine shot one in garwood a few years ago. And another friend of mine shot one on a river. I happened to walk into the taxidermy shop in eagle lake and he was in the process of mounting one...said a guy shot it in garwood also, it wasn't my friends. Pretty cool

They are agressive birds in captivity. Very aggressive! Shoot them all

Looking for hunting leases and local friends (ex-guide, primarily duck, hogs, and deer)
