I will be hunting in NW Alabama this weekend. Has anyone ever hunted there? Not sure what to expect so if anyone has any tips or insight on the area it would be greatly appreciated.

I've been hunting central Alabama for the past 12 years. In-laws have always had a lease for me to hunt during Thanksgiving weekend. The hunting is similar to North East Texas. Big pines, hard woods. No feeders allowed during the season, so a lot of food plots. It can get surprisingly cold - near freezing. The first time I went out I didn't check the weather for the area and nearly froze.

For where I've hunted, not sure about NW Alabama, the rut doesn't start until end of December through January. So my experience is that I have yet to shoot or see a shooter. I've take my share of slickheads there. Taste just like Texas does. It would be like early season hunting in East/N Central Texas.

I'm heading out there next week as well, the new lease they are on looks more promising than the ones they've been on in the past. Less hunting pressure and they have a ton of deer on the cameras that I've seen.

I was out there in January last year and the pre-rut activity just started and my BIL took a 4-5 yr old 8 pt, it was finally scored at 158 1/2". The deer can be big. It is beautiful country. Good luck!
