My dad and I have been hunting a spot way away from everybody else on our lease. It's the only place we hunt. Heading to my spot today and notice 4 wheeler tracks. While hanging a camera, one of the guys texts me and asks if the popup was mine. I say yes, and he says he and his wife are about 150 yards down the road hunting for pigs. Well, it's the middle of the rut and this is a 400 yard dead end trail but....... ok. So, I head to another spot about 200 yards away so I wouldn't be shooting at them and the deer would have already crossed their scent. Well, I hear them shoot. He killed a nice 8 pt. that I had gotten on camera for the first time last week. I guess I can't be mad, but running over my corn to put a stand up for the first time on a dead end trail that's only 400 yards long? We don't have any written rules, but we were told not to hunt on top of someone. I'm just really disappointed. Oh and we had an open spot still, and he says he is going to buy it out for "his wife."

Sorry to hear that. Are you in Nacogdoches?

While I was reading your post, I thought to myself..."that sounds just like a place I used to hunt (in Nac)",

Things like that is why I only hunt with people I know well. If one of my hunting buddies did that I'd be cussing their arse out, and if they could handle that we'd "talk" about it more later.

Yes, but the guy is brand new on the lease and we are too.

Wait a minute lemme get this right. A new guy and his wife on an ATV passes by your pop up on a 400 yard trail, proceeds another 150 yards, contacts you to let you know he is 150 yards down the trail...about mid point on the trail and that is where they intend to hunt? May I assume he was asking to hunt exclusively as in first come first served and you agreed....OR...please tell us you were both bow hunting????

He was not asking to hunt exclusively. We were rifle hunting. I went to a different spot that I had that was farther away from them so I wouldn't be shooting down the road at them. He assumed I was hunting the popup still though and still hunted there.

Sorry to hear that bud. I think it good to have a captain of the ship on leases especially if you are not a tight group. Rules can be frustrating but hog hunting during rut just a couple hundred yards away would be something a captain should have an opinion on.

He got there about 20 minutes before me, so I wasn't in the popup yet.

Actually, I discussed it with one of the older guys on the lease. He was in agreement. He actually asked me tonight if I'd consider running the lease.

Good luck! Don't let it spoil your next hunt.

Don't sound like he was hog hunting if he shot a nice 8 pt . What a piece of work . There should be something done as far as rules . Cause if not just messing up your hunt it could be dangerous for each other . Hope you get that settled

I love hunting ! Got to love it !

Well don't let him push you around. You paid your hard earned cash to hunt on this place and its your cash that puts the corn in the feeder.. I think i would have blown my top to say the least...

Wow. Some folks have no respect. Sounds like y'all needs some rules put in place. Ashame that you have to make it clear that something like that isn't right, but some folks are just blooming idiots.

I would have just told him I put that blind up and I am going to hunt it, you need to make sure you are not in my line of fire then I would have ruined his hunt if he did not leave after that. Some people only learn good manners if someone teaches them. Some people dont know, some dont care, teach them and/or make them learn especially if you are going to have to share your lease with them. May be just me but I usally stand my ground on principal.

That's the thing. He thought I was hunting that stand and still hunted there. I moved only because I didn't want to hit them.

See if this illustrates things. My blind is at the bottom left marker with the red pin on it. He was setup at the pin to the northeast. I decided to hunt at the marker at the top left and face west. As you can see, he was in grave danger if I would've shot from my blind.

on any hunting lease with two or more hunters there must be rules and must have a lease manger. on my lease everybody gets two copies of the rules one copy you sign and give back to me, if you break a rule your gone, period. on a good lease you always have hunters waiting to join. yes to some it be hard, cold, but it works. I've been doing this for 40 years.

"Let(ting) them balls out" may result in a poor outcome when the targeted party has a high-powered rifle.

May I suggest offering the guy a beer and sitting down to work out a hunting protocol to avoid future issues. This way, you both remain friends and you retain your balls.
