I would take an AK over a SKS. Unless it's a russian BUT then I wouldn't use it. The russian that I do have doesn't really get used and I suspect the ak may be a little more accurate too.

For knocking around I'd go with an SKS. I have and like both, but my SKS's are generally more accurate than my AK's. Reliability is about the same, even with the one I Tapco f'd out.

Saiga (russian made AK in sporterized version), comes in variety of calibers: .223, 7.62x39, .308. All with 16 or 20 in barrels.
You Can convert it to "AK", extremely easy to do so.
Imagine .308 AK.....underfolder...

Both are good in my opinion but i would choose the ak simply because it is easier to change mags, assuming you go with a 30 rounder in the sks.

SKS. I've never owned a nice AK only WASR, AMD-65, etc. If it was a nicer AK I'd probably pick the AK.

I've had good luck with $300 SKS rifles. I haven't seen a $300 AK in years.

Both are reliable. I guess price is a lot of the reason I choose SKS.

I'd vote for the SKS. Just make sure it has positive sear engagement, and keep the firing pin clean.

As much as AKs are goign for these days...I'd probably get a Saiga and convert it if I wanted the pistol grip setup. But there's still some deals out there. I saw on Arfcom a guy found a lightly used Arsenal SGL21 for $450.

I just got a couple of old c&R sks's, don't have an ak.
But If I was looking between the two for a knock around outdoors rifle i'd think ak is the better choice.
