...last year. Since I haven't shot my gun since then I assumed that it was okay. Wow. Just, wow. We would miss you next year on our lease.

You've gotten a ton of advice so I'll only add one thing. I learned this when I started shooting a bow and it works as well for shooting a rifle.
When you shoot, concentrate on seeing its reaction to the bullet impact through the scope. Did it kick its back legs out? Did it hump up in the stomach? Was one front leg held stiff when it jumped? If you see that, you can be pretty sure you had good shooting form and after a bit, those things will tell you where it's hit.
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

Sir. I'm going to have to ask you to step away from the rifle. Like others said please go check/practice shooting that thing.

similar thing happened this weekend hog hunting. two people shot, the pig just lumbered out of the water like nothing happened. was for sure they both missed. we went and tracked him down - dropped dead 25yds away. i know a pig is a different animal but i was 100% the shooters missed. one was in the eye!

...last year. Since I haven't shot my gun since then I assumed that it was okay. Wow. Just, wow. Agree... very bad assumption. Always check zero and get target practice in before the season. (If not year round)

I can't believe you pulled the trigger a 2nd time on a deer without verifying your gun was dead on. Much less a 3rd and 4th time.

This is not serious. I'm thinking he's trolling and he's getting bit.

Disapointing first two Weekends for me.I've missed all four Deer that I've seen including one Hog this morning. My gun is Zeroed, but for some reason Im thinking the crosshairs are on the Deer/hog,but when I shoot they dont drop. This is starting to piss me off.I guess I need to be more patient, and squeeze it off. I think I'll find my to the range this week to practice.I went last year and shot and I was on target.Since I haven't shot my gun since then I assumed that it was okay.maybe I need work on pulling the trigger.I just hope I see something when I go back Thanksgiving Weekend. What caliber, and what ammo are you using? Rimfire is illegal for deer in Texas; If you're shooting CF, you using FMJ ? If you are wounding deer and not attempting to track/recover, you are BREAKING THE LAW !! "§ 62.011. RETRIEVAL AND WASTE OF GAME. (a) Except as provided by Subsection (c), it is an offense if a person while hunting kills or wounds a game bird or game animal and intentionally or knowingly fails to make a reasonable effort to retrieve the animal or bird and include it in the person's daily or seasonal bag limit." I'd say you are 'done for the season', sir!!!!!!!!!!

This is not serious. I'm thinking he's trolling and he's getting bit. I'd like to hope that, but it looks like he's from East Texas (Shelby County) judging from his other posts, but still, that's no excuse (anymore) . . . . . I stand by my first post, he's 'done for the season' ; tagged out, and with nothing to show for it !!!

"...And those that don't take the time to sight in their rifles, make an iffy shot, then want help looking for the deer. Don't mind helping anyone find a deer but after 2 hours of looking - then they slip up and say something like "well I guess I should've checked zero before season" - Well that's a big ole "Duh". "
Above is one of my comments from the "biggest pet peeve" post!
If all is well with rifle and scope and it's on.....then you might consider range time with a more experienced shooter who can watch you shoot and load for you. As mentioned in another post, that person can load you up one at a time without you seeing if a round is chambered - you will know real quick if you're flinching on the shot.

never ever ever ever ever go to the woods without knowing your gun and checking your zero beforehand. Always, every time you pull the trigger watch your target close when you shoot, both how it reacts and where it goes.

Here's a question for the experts. I normally sight my rifle for dead-center bullseye (I use a Lead Sled to help) at 50 yrds. Why? Because I don't wanna walk back and forth at 100 yrds to check the grouping.
Anyway, If I'm dead-on at 50, then I can't be more than an inch or so off at 100...right?

Your hold on the rifle, your cheek weld, your eye alignment on the scope will all likely be different than it is with the lead sled. A 3 shot group at 100 can confirm this.

Thanks Mike. I've missed 2 this year. Unfortunately, that's more than I've missed in the last 10 years.
I'll get out there earlier on Friday and sight in at 100 yrds without the sled.
