I got my first deer the second day of opening season with the items listed below. I was not impressed with the Remington 220gr ammo just flew right threw. I will be loading up some Hornady 208gr A-Max and see how that does on the small deer here in TX. AR-15 Selph Arms LLC 10.5" 300BLK barrel YHM phantom suppressor with QD mount Rockriver 2 stage trigger Remington 220gr subsonic

the reason the bullet flew right thru is its not moving fast enough to intitate expansion.
thats the issue, for alot of suppressed weapons that have to fire subsonic ammo, its not moving fast enough to open up a bullet.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I disagree slightly that the lack of expansion was due to velocity. While that would be true with a hunting bullet, Remington loads an open tip match in their subs that isn't designed to open up. Since you are loading yourself, i HIGHLY recommend this bullet for subsonic hunting --> GOOD BULLETS My buddy loads them for his whisper and you would not believe the way the bullet opens up. I wish a had a pic of one that we recovered, but it's as big or bigger than a mechanical broadhead. Being big and slow, you are likely restricted to 100 yards for accurracy, but your 220 remingtons aren't much better. I have some A-max loaded subsonic for pigs, but I won't deer hunt with them. Same issue with the A-max...it's gonna pass right thru.

Brad, what was the shot distance? I took the shot at 50 yards, i have a couple of customers that told me it would be the best round. I just got some Hornady 208 A-Max ammo so i will give it a try on Monday. I would have had my feeder at 100 yards, the land i hunt just fell into my lap for free and had no time to clear out years of brush to get further away.

Is that your first deer or first deer with that rifle? I have taken many deer over the years. This is the first using the 300blk subsonic, i believe the 208gr A-Max will do the job and expand with the slower velocity. I will post my results on Monday with pictures.

This is the rifle i used, it is a pistol gas system with a mid length magpul hand guard. I did this barrel hand guard configuration custom to try out a new product for the web site; it works perfect as you can see with the test target 7 rounds of 208 A-Max at 50 yards (.550") group with one flyer.

I wonder what length barrel he is using? 16" I've shot the gun myself. His son dropped a doe in her tracks this morning at 40 yards.
