Hey guys I saw that Cabelas is having 20 off 150 and was thinking about getting new duck decoys. I've done pretty well with my cheap Flambeux's over the past few yrs but I would like to upgrade. Looking for some more realistic decoys that will hold up. Was considering GHG pro grades but saw some reviews on Cabelas that said there were some issues with premature paint chipping. If anyone has any recomendations or experience with the pro grades please chime in.

I hunt GHG PGs. Most of mine are texas rigged which is hell on your deks. With that said, the only place that is really chipping is around the bills.

I love my ghg pg decoys. Get a slotted decoy bag and it will solve most of the premature paint issues.
OMG, this is the best slumber party ever!

Same here with the pro grades. The only issue I have had was with some BW teal, the paint chipped really bad, but I was told by avery that i had an early batch. I since replaced them and had no problems.

I run straight GHG. They may not be the best, but I think they are the best for the money

I've been using the same Greenhead Gear decoys for the past 3 years and they have held up great! I'm not easy on the decoys and the paint still looks good, even with 2-4 hunts per week and being tossed in back of the pickup.

I've got the same ones I bought when they first got popular. Used to get a dozen for $30...now they're twice the price. They're still holding up pretty good. If your using pro grades just spray krylon on em.

I've been thinking about replacing my Readhead Brand Mallards because it seems like every season I use them a couple of more of them develop leaks. I've been thinking about GHG's or the Drake Brand with the removable keel, but it looks like Drake has discontinued building their Double Duty Decoys...... I'd also like to have some stake mounted decoys as well that I could set up extremely shallow or just up on the shore for more motion. From what I've seen they pivot very easily in the slightest breeze.........

waydr.... DONT get removable keel decoys. theres a reason GHG scrapped the idea. I bought some back when they still made them, and ended up losing 2 keels (and weights) throwing out decoys. if they come loose, youre screwed.

Redhead brand decoys are the biggest pieces of crap ever created. Lasted maybe 3 hunts and were toast.

If youre a "fair" hunter buy cheap stuff. Hiding is WAY more important than decoys.

Looks like I'm safe to go with the GHG PG's. I'm excited to update the spread.
Featherduster can you explain the comment about spraying krylon. Where do I get it is there only one type of krylon and will it flare birds. I want to preserve them as long as possible but I dont want to screw them up either.

Redhead brand decoys are the biggest pieces of crap ever created. Lasted maybe 3 hunts and were toast. Bought a dozen flambeau's that might give the redhead brand a run for their money. Damn paint chipped off these decoys the first trip out.

Redhead brand decoys are the biggest pieces of crap ever created. Lasted maybe 3 hunts and were toast. These were my first decoys and a Christmas present from my wife. I'm think I am down to about a half a dozen of them actually being functional. The paint held up well but the keel slots developed leaks after 3 seasons, it seemed like a pair a season. I got my 2012 Mack's Prarie Wings catalog out last night and started looking at the GHG's and they have quiet a selection. I'm thinking about the Pro Grade Timber Pack or the Marsh Pack since I'm only wanting to have about a half a dozen Mallards in my spread which is usually the general make up of what we see around here. When you see ducks grouped up feeding or resting there is usually no more than a half a dozen ducks of any species in the group. A Puddler Pack is something else I'd like to add.

Keel-less or removable decoys have their place. I hunt sloughs and flooded wheat where unless the wind is really blowing my decoys won't move. A nonkeeled decoy will move around in the slightest breeze or with a pulsator in the decoys. So for me I want the keel-less decoys, I wish I could find more than just mallards.
Also, another thing this post did is turn me off of the GHG decoys. I don't want my decoys to look like the guys next to me. I want them to be different. Nothing wrong with GHG they make a great mass produced decoy.
I have some FA wigeon and pintail decoys that are on their 4th season and are holding up really well and the last two years they were used pretty hard. So that is another alternative for ya.

I use GHG and FA brand. Both hold up well to the abuse of texas rigged and tossed in the bed of a pickup.
