Agreed.

To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

X3, all depends on your goal. If you want to grow old deer then it was the right decision. If you would have been tickled with him as he is then you should have busted him.

I believe you made the right call. That deer is going to be awesome in the next year to 2 years. I guarantee you there is a good mature buck on your place that is ready to be taken that you haven't seen yet. Plus the season just started.

Good choice letting him walk. The only problem is when other hunters on the properties next door shoot him.

nothing against you in particular just because i dont know you, but, thinking like that blows my mind and i have family/friends with the same mindset. they have to get a buck and think their season was a waste if they dont. i just dont get it.

No offense taken. I asked the question because the OP seemed liked he was having second thoughts. I am someone that will let one walk first day, last day, doesn't matter. Just to give you an idea of what I am talking about, I passed on a 4.5 you P&Y buck several weeks ago because he is too young. Mind you, this would have been my first bow kill. Whether he is shot with a bow or rifle, dead is dead.

Let the young ones with great potential walk. There are plenty of young ones that don't have the potential that should be taken.

I would have a hard time passing on him but that is because I know the guy who's stand is next to mine and his boys wouldn't let him take two more steps if they saw him . We are pushing more management minded Hunters but some guys just will never get it.

Thanks for all of the comments.

I am glad to know that so many on the forum agree with letting him go. It helps relieve the angst of letting the best rack I have ever seen on the hoof walk. Of all the hunters that I know personally, the ones that I respect all agree that it was the right thing to do. That is not to say that I would not respect anyone that did take such a deer, hell, I was about 2 ounces of trigger pull away from doing it myself. It has been occurring to me while watching the comments come in that it makes a big difference where a hunter is in his deer hunting “career” and their hunting opportunities as to what decision they would make. If I was a first year adult hunter or a teenager sitting in the blind with my Dad for the first time who could second guess me for taking such a deer. Having now taken a few nice deer I am much more willing to wait for the right deer not just a legal deer.

I am also glad that there has been no animosity generated by this post. I think that points to what good people are on this forum.
