Good morning fellow hunters I am looking for a blood tracking dog or a Deer dog in general. I have a buddy that lost his buck this year to a bad shot placement and tracked it for about 500 yards. I have had to put down both o my boxers to old age and have not had a dog for 2 years. Im going out on a limb and be the first in our group to purchase a dog to train, have trained or help train for future hunts in general and to add another addition to the family thanks
We have 2 children 10 and 5 preferably a smaller dog for now. But I'm open for suggestions

Blue Lacy Pup... Someone had pups on here the other day. Jack Russell or Rat Terrier can also be trained to do this type of work, but require more time to train. Also, as most of the Jacks or Rats are not really bread for this type of work it would be hard to determine a good dog or breeder. If you want a started dog most of the trainers have Catahoula but, I am not sure that a Catahoula would be a good family dog with the age of the children you posted. I have one coming in a couple of months but am pretty sure she will be kenneled. This guy has some good opinions and a book on how to train a blood tracking dog: http://www.blogger.com/profile/08397656387385012319

Several good breeds from German wirehair pointers/DD, labs, lacies, curr, etc.
Easiest way to narrow it down is if you want big dog or small dog.

Well the kids wanted a French mastiff but I can't justify a 225 lb dog To track blood haha

There is a Texas blood tracking group, forget the exact.name but you can Google them and find lots of info and breeders. Are you in a county where its legal to use dogs for blood tracking?
I'll take a Black Female every time.

If I had to pick, id say a Weiner dog! Don't laugh there are some that are used for just that purpose.

Start with this book: TRACKING DOGS FOR FINDING WOUNDED DEER by JOHN JEANNENEY. He goes over several breeds which are being used with success. Dont forget your local shelters You dont need a pure breed dog for blood trailing Go to the shelter with a tennis ball and bounce it near the kennels. See which dogs show a strong interest(I would start with a pup) in chasing the ball. Ive had great success with training mixed breeds for blood trailing.

Also get with all of your deer hunting buddies and have them start collecting deer blood for you NOW. I use empty plastic water bottles like ozarka etc. The more blood you can start collecting now and freezing it, the better of you are going to be once you start with the training.

I gave thebowfisher on the forum a female Catahoula. He has 4 young boys. She plays fetch till she is worn out with them, and even swims in the pool with them. She is very protective over the boys. Shame on anyone that she thinks may harm them. Last I heard she was doing very well on blood tracking wounded deer.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

A friend of mine and I both have Jack Russell Terriors. They are from African bloodlines that were bred to hunt Leopards (with other larger dogs) and for blood trailing wounded game in Africa. My friends came from Africa and mine is from a pair that came from Africa then bred here. They have a really great nose and tracking sense. Can be fearless but due to small size are not much for baying or holding a wounded deer that can still run. Finding a wounded deer is not a problem for them. Keeping up with them short little legs running under brush you can't get thru is tough.
Are idiots multiplying faster than normal people?

Don't get a catahoula if you have kids. My black mouth cur would be excellent if I worked with her. There is a jack russel breeder in quanah that has working dogs.

There is a jack russel breeder in quanah that has working dogs. what experience do you have with Catahoulas being bad for kids? not sure i follow why you would say that. i was raised around them and my kids have been raised with them. we have had other dogs too, but none as loyal and gentle with the kids as the catahoula. just bought a new pup to pick up this christmas. my girls are 8 and 10 btw.. if you have some differing experience, please share. but my experience is based on approximately 20 different catahoula dogs over the years, both male and female.
Stuff my dad said in the deer blind
"I can dive deeper and come up drier" "did you do that?"

I use my male Labs. I shot an 8 point with my crossbow that ran down a field and into some heavy brush. After the shot I walked back to the house got my ATV and got my 2 males and drove back to where I shot my deer. My sire picked up the blood trail at the point where I shot that deer and took off. Trailing behind them I found my arrow first. That deer left a really good trail so my male was at a run when he hit that heavy brush. There was heck of a commotion, growling, barking and carrying on coming from that thick brush. When I got off the ATV and into the brush my sire was on top of that deer trying to drag him down. That deer had died on its knees propped up against 3 trees. My sire was making sure he didn't get away even though rigor had already set in on that deer. I got a good laugh watching him maul that deer. After cleaning the deer and getting what I wanted off that deer I turned the carcass over to my Labs and by the next day it was gone. They have been playing with the hide off that deer and off a doe I killed, with my crossbow, for about 2 weeks now. I feed my deer carcasses to my dogs so they know that there is some good eating at the end of that blood trail.

I have two female 7week old black mouth cur and mountain cur cross pups for sale. I'll guarantee them to do what ever you train them to do. I have had excellent luck with the mountain cur dogs in the past. And this female black mouth cur the pups are out of is one of the smartest dog I have had.
