So how would you rate your overall Opening Weekend hunting? It was without question, the worst Opening Weekend ever for us in East Texas. Between two private tracts that I hunt with others, and public land that I hunt myself, only two doe were taken. In fact, I saw more deer on public land than I did at my feeder on private land. And there wasn't much shooting in the surrounding area. Everyone reported seeing fewer deer, with some not seeing any.

Opening Weekend Poll
single choice
1 - Worst ever (28%, 53 Votes)
2 - Below average (41%, 79 Votes)
3 - About average (14%, 27 Votes)
4 - Above average (7%, 13 Votes)
5 - Best ever (10%, 19 Votes)
Total Votes: 191

Below average seems to be the report, however I'm sitting in my blind now and seeing plenty of deer. They just weren't really snappy on comming to the feeder.

It's just really, really green.

Wait till December, things will pick up

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I voted best ever because my wife took her first deer. It was a wonderful event.

On the other hand not a single other person on our lease with 14 hunters out got a deer.

I watched a couple of doe in the National Forest that showed no sign of being hungry or pressured by bucks. If the rate at which these two were moving is any indication of what other deer were doing, I can understand why other hunters reported seeing fewer deer.

Mine was the best ever for me. Shot a nice 10pt opening day about 5 miles from the house then shot my biggest deer to date this morning in Parker County. I guess luck was with me this weekend, I have a few friends that didn't see anything all weekend in various parts of the state.

My rifle opener was pretty bad. Got there at 3 pm friday to bow hunt, dropped off my chair threw some corn and set the thermacell. Get in to move the truck and it won't start. Spent the rest of that time working on it. Uncle came out and towed it out of the was so I could hunt in the AM. Got there 1hr before first light. Decided to lay on the ground looking down a road. A jackrabbit ran by and about 40mins later a bobcat followed. I pulled the rifle up and fogged my scope so he walked. Finally got the truck running and left for work in the evening. Broke down again, 45mins from home, had to call my dad to come get me. Got home showered and went to work...I've had some bad luck the past 3 seasons BUT its usually followed by really good luck so, maybe for Thanksgiving I will have a deer down and be able to post something worthwhile.

Deer are hitting everything else but corn right now and don't have to move far.

And the acorn crop this year appears to have been enormous. What we really need is a killing frost.

Above average! Seen 2 of the biggest deer I have ever seen! A 165" mainframe 10 with 3 4" kickers and a 140" crabclaw 10! Both never offered me a decent shot but I was the most excited I have EVER been especially when that big un appeared!

The bow and rifle are going with me Tuesday. If he comes into bow range (and if I can keep my composure) I'll take him with my bow......if he's outta bow range I'll send him a bullet. And im not gonna be picky....the first one to offer me a shot gets one.

I saw 1 small deer Saturday am run across a log road. Then that afternoon we had a BAD Thunderstorm come thru with LOTS of wind and rain. When the wind died down about 30 minutes before dark. As soon as the wind died down the deer started moving. I had a LARGE doe come out at 120 yards to feed. One shot to the neck with my AR-15 and she took a DIRT NAP. When I weighed her at the camp I was shocked. This Doe weigh 135 pounds live weight. Killed in Polk county. No deer seen Sunday.

Ok, not that many opening weekends under my belt. Until Sun evening very slow. Tonight picked up. Shot a solid 8 management buck before he past genes. Most important shared time with great friends I only see during season. And experienced the glory of God's creations. Some have life time of hunting memories, others only a few. Never know how many I will be fortunate enough to enjoy, do I dont sweat the slow hunts or any frustrations.

Tough weekend for us. I saw a small buck and 2 doe. No one on our lease took a deer, but we got 5 hogs. 3 big boar hogs and 2 sows. It was warm and the moon was big. Also got a big storm Saturday evening.

It's usually slow for us where we are in Eastland county on the opening weekend. With the acorn crop, the moon at 70%, abundant cover and warm weather, it's always tough starting out. I voted middle of the road.

I saw 4 deer driving into Marshall from Mt. Pleasant Saturday morning. Those are the only hooved creatures I saw the rest of the weekend. Not a single thing and I was in my stand for all but about two hours total this weekend. Awful.

It was actually pretty decent at our place today. Opening day we saw nothing. I passed up an 11 pt that would have been a really nice buck had I had been sure he would have made AR. This deer is crowding 130 with maybe 13 inches of spread. Also saw a really nice 8 that was too narrow also. He was a big deer and will make a nice deer next year.

My BIL came down and I managed to put him on his second deer ever. A big cow horned spike. I was pleased all in all. I wish I could have gotten a deer but seeing him shoot one was cool. I did shoot a nice boar hog opening morning.

3 deer taken on our place, spike, a doe, and a small buck that a guy wanted to shoot for his 4 year olds first sit. I saw half of a big bodied buck as he was walking into brush in a small cut down a deep ravine, shot a hog this morning and dad got a doe so we have meat in the freezer to process next friday. Ate enough to last me all week. I said below average, but opening weekend is incredible no matter what at our lease
