Traveled South from Kansas City on I-35 yesterday, passed through the Flint Hills area in Kansas. Knee high grass and draws as far as you can see. Does it hold any upland birds? Anybody ever hunt there?

There are some greater prairie chickens and the occasional covey of bobwhites but the numbers are not like they use to be so I'm told.

We've hunted quail outside of White City which is a little north of there - still in the Flint Hills though - Quail population is just ok where we hunt - not many pheasant (hunt those in west Kansas) and have only seen one Prairie Chicken.

The very best numbers of prarie chicken in the whole United States. Depends on where you are at, but quail have been declining for years. Like someone has already said, pheasant are west and north of the "heart" of the hills.
Killed many, many coyotes in the area using calls.

Hunted around there for years, Yates Center and Eureka. Best might have been around Severy. But few good years in the last 15. Hunting chickens near Cassidy, there were some draws near Yates Center that you didn't need a dog. Just walk the draw and thru every plum thicket. You could breakout a young dog in a couple of weeks. Feels good just to think about it.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

There are still prarie chickens just west of Yates Center towards Eureka, but if you go a bit north of there, it is lights out. As far as quail, I believe there are more Dodo birds in that area, lol

Beautiful country, was great bird hunting. Some of my first serious bird hunts were there(late 1960s), dogs in the trunk of an olds cutlass with the deck behind the back seat cut out so they got good air. Stopped more than one person in their tracks who saw me open the trunk and two or three pointers pile out. Moved up to a station wagon the next year, remember those? You could drive up a driveway and get permission to hunt almost anywhere and the birds were everywhere. I know, Bill, it's a dream but it's a good one......

Lived in Wichita for several years, beautiful country. Seen prairie chickens around Cassody but that about it. Lots of good pond fishing and scenic drives on the country roads as most of it is open range.
