I noticed that almost all fox kills in Texas are of the grey variety. Was wondering if red foxes are extremely rare? I had one on camera 3-4 years ago in Young county, late night. He/she was something else, black tipped nose and tail. Would have loved a mount of that one.

I saw one in Oak Cliff when I was a kid, it ran in front of our car. They were imported from England 100 years ago or more. They are fairly rare in Texas. More common is the grey fox, which has some areas of red on it's body.

I think in all my years I have seen 3 of them. 2 on one ranch in Kendall County and one around Marble Falls. Might have seen one more or so but can't remember for sure.

We'd see one every few years or more at the house in colorado county. I've never seen a grey fox until the other night. Ran across the road here in Austin. It was always pretty cool to get to see a fox, dad always thought it was neat when he would see one. No way I could ever shoot one.

Really? There are thousands of greys at a place I hunt in Sanderson. Hit the predator call at night and you'll have doubles and triples running in. Fun hunt.

I've seen several in Nacogdoches Co. My best friend used to raise chickens in his back yard. He kept having chickens come up missing. He stayed up one night and killed a red fox, ended up killing three before the killing stopped. He gave all three to the Asian man that lived across the street. He ate them and loved it.

We have trapped and shot several around Wood and Smith County. I use raise a lot of chickens years ago and they sure did like the taste of them too. They have some beautiful coats. I sure wish I would have mounted one or two.

Reds are mostly nocturnal while grays can be see all hours night or day. Reds den in the ground and sandy soils are ideal for mothers to raise little ones. They often times move between dens if they are pressured by humans. Our property in western Mills is sandy ground and we raise a few pups every year. Most years we raise a litter in our hay stacklots. It furnishs an unlimited diet of mice and field rats. Not to mention a fun playground for the little ones. There were 5 pups in this litter but 2 were bashful.

There are a lot of them just north of Columbus.

Wow. Awesome pics. My Dad was an oil paint artist and did several red fox paintings. You can see a couple in the link in my Sig line

I've lived all my 68 years in Texas and spent many an hour out of doors. I've seen only two red fox here. Of course, grey fox are almost as common as raccoons. However, I've seen quite a few reds in Europe. There's a group that live between the runways at the airport near Frankfurt, Germany. They seem to enjoy watching the airplanes taxi down the runways waiting for takeoff.
