This is my first post, so hello everyone. I have been given the opportunity to hunt on 40-50 acres in Cherokee county. My father and I looked around the land and walked it some. It is mostly a 40 acre square that is VERY thick and has a decent creek running through the middle. It has a high line on one side(can't hunt it) and some open places(can't hunt) on the other 2 sides and a road on the 4th side. We did see some spots that looked like deer were bedding down and were able to find some tracks but no rubs. We also have found a couple decent spots that were somewhat "open" but just felt concerned we could not locate a rub. Is this something we should be concerned about? Any advise for first time hunting in east texas?

I would not be concerned about it too much.. Rubs do not necessarily mean bucks are staying in an area, they could just have made them passing through and now be living 10 miles away. I would recommend putting out a trail camera over a corn pile and leaving the camera out a week or so. This should give you a pretty good idea of what is in the area. I live/hunt in Cherokee County as well, good luck!

Thanks for the response. Any recommendations on a trail camera? We were going to place some salt licks out as well, do you have any experience with those? Looks like we will be investing in a camera and getting it placed this week to see what we have going on out there.

welcome I would start with a trail cam to see what you can find and then maybe hand feed a spot or two that you do find some deer moving in. I have Primos 35 Truth Cam that is a good camera for the money and takes over 10,000 pics on set of batteries.

Going to Academy tonight to look at a cam. Looking forward to seeing what is out there. Do any of you use feeders? Have an issues with hogs knocking them over?

I use feeders.. hogs are pretty bad here in Cherokee County.. I would recommend one of 3 things:

1: Drive t-posts down by each feeder leg and wire them together.
2: Put up a pen around your feeder(hog panel).
3: Put up a hanging feeder.

If you don't want hogs at all at your feeder, put up the hog panel pen. If you enjoy shooting hogs then do one of the other two.

I agree with stxranchman on the camera. I've also had good luck with the Bushnell Trophy Cam IR.
