Anyone have any good advice on bore sighters? I have looked at many options and they all seem to have pros and cons. Any recommendation on either the ones that look like a shell, fit in the end of barell, or the one that fits around the barell and you line up in your scope? I know they are not dead on, but with the cost of ammo would like to use less to get sighted in. Second question is on the multiple caliber versions does the .25 Cal work on all. 25s, .257 Roberts sepcifically? Thanks for the help.

Start with your target up CLOSE, say 25 yds. If it is a bolt action, take the bolt out and prop the rifle up so that you can see the target centered through the bore. Without moving the rifle, adjust the scope to the bullseye. Shoot one careful shot at the bullseye. After that prop the rifle once more with the scope aimed right at the bullseye. Without moving the rifle adjust your scope until the crosshairs are aiming at the bullet hole. You should be sighted in real close. You can put the finishing touches on it at the distance you want to shoot. Spend the cost of a bore sighter on something else...

The ones with grids and various caliber arbors that go into the end of your barrel are the ones I like best. If the one you buy has the arbors that fit in the end of the barrel then yes the 25 caliber arbor should fit any 25 caliber chambering. At least thats the way it is with the Bushnell bore sighter I have used for years. The lazer ones that fit into your action are the ones where the exact chambering will come into play.
The lazer bore sighters that stick into the end of your barrel and shoot a beam at a distant object have thier uses as well. Those work well on AR's and guns where the scope is mounted well above what would be considered a "normal" level like with alot of AR mounts.

If you don't have sandbags to prop your rifle with, and you are on a tight budget, I have a proven plan. Get three pair of crew socks, preferable clean. Fill three socks with pinto beans, and fill three with rice. After shooting, cook the beans and rice...

If its a bolt action or AR upper you don't need any device. Pull the bolt, turn the magnification on the scope to the lowest setting, support the rifle on the fore end (I use a bipod) and sandbag the rear, sight down the barrel, turn the elevation and windage knobs until the scope has a sight picture of what you see down the barrel. With practice you can get good at doing it at 100 yards and have a rifle zeroed in two shots.

You can place something like a ball on a post at about 20 yards. Then look through the barrel at the ball. Look through the scope. Move the cross hairs to the ball. The turns on the scope will be opposite direction of what is marked on the scope.

I have a 4'X4' target board at 100 yards. I cover it with yesterday's newspaper then put up my target and give the rifle a sporting chance to be within 2' of the point of aim. I don't remember the last time I had to go through the bore sighting routine.

you can make it even easier by pre zeroing your scope. count the clicks to the right until it stops, count the clicks to the left until it stops, average the clicks and you know where your center is. repeat for elevation.

A friend used a bore sight on my rifle and it was 6 3/4" high and 2 3/4" to right at 50 yards. Seems like a waste of money to me. JMO

Cabela's allegedly bore sighted two scopes on two rifles for two different firemen friends of mine. They used some sort of "bore sighting device". Both rifles weren't on an 18" x 18" paper at 100 yards. I pulled the bolt on both rifles and bore sighted the old fashioned way and both rifles were miraculously on paper on the first shot.
Bore sighting tools are a waste of money.

udamdan, Make sure your scope is on the rifle perfectly level before you go too far on sighting it in. It may just be me, or it may be the photo, but it doesn't look level with the rifle to me. That will make a difference, when you raise or lower the crosshairs you will be moving left or right also, and when you move them left or right you will be raising or lowering also.. To level the scope, prop the rifle level by taking the scope off and placing a level across the bottom half of the ring that is attached to the rifle. Then hang a string with a weight from the wall you are sighting on to give you a perfectly verticle line. Line the verticle crosshair up with that to give you a scope alignment that is level with your rifle.

The picture on the wall should be level, the crosshairs look level with the picture, but the rifle looks like it is leaning to the left. Once again it could just be the picture makes it look that way...

I covered that in the sticky above.
Another way is to slip the proper stack of feeler guages between the bottom of the scope and the scope base, provided you have a one piece base. This simply puts the bottom of the scope parrallel to the rail. It is no guarantee of level if the screws in the action weren't machined top dead center.
