Look at CZ rifles. Maybe not quite mainstream, but very nice quality build, many options. Never had problems with CZ.

I shoot the Hornady Custom Lite 120's in 7mm-08 and the recoil is very mild. I shot a 140lb buck this past year, probably 75 yards, and he dropped like a sack of potatoes. Didn't take a step. Granted, thats not a 250 yard shot, but what 9YO is going to be shooting at 250 yards? My recommendation would be the Savage Lady Hunter. You did say no Savages, but the ergonomics on this rifle seem perfect for what you are looking for. I would check it out, its a very nice looking rifle and build just for kids/females.

She won't be shooting @ 250yds right now but will be using this gun for a long, long time. I checked out the Savage Lady Hunter. Now that looks like it's fit the bill nicely for $700! I guess they don't make any decent deer rifles in a 11-11.5" LOP?????

They carry reduced recoil loads for 260 at midway usa. Remington claims the round is effective out to 200yds with a MV of 2360.

When I picked my rifle up the shop owner said his daughter shot the same rifle and loved it.I went back and forth between the 260 and 7 08 for months before choosing the 260. If you want to be able to find ammo local the 243 or 7 08 will be a better choice. If you dont mind ordering online or handloading the 260 is worth considering.

I bought a 260 ruger hawkeye a month or so ago. I really wanted to go with the m7 from the start, but liked the 1-8 twist in the hawkeye. The fit and finish of the gun was terrible and had barrel problems from the start. I sent the gun back before shooting it and still havent seen it.While i liked the size, weight and twist in the hawkeye I already like the feel of the remington better. Not to mention finding triggers and stocks will be much easier with a remington m7.

As she gets older you just switch to the standard loads.

Another vote for the Remmy Model 7. It is available in all the calibers you mentioned......243, .260, 7mm-08.

Nothing against the winchester, Im sure it is a great gun, do they make a youth model?

I have alot of experience with rem and wby vanguards. I have been nothing but pleased with both. Out of the calibers you listed 243 will kick least and 7mm08 most, past that depends on bullet weights, if you shoot a 100 grain bullet out of all of them it should have similar recoil out of all of them as well.

All 3 will do the job, but for an all around hunting round, I think the 260 and 7mm08 would be better choices and the 7mmo8 will have more ammo availability and has factory reduced ammo available till she grows into it more, and I think you would have to worry more about her ability to shoot to 250 yards more than the guns ability.

Looks like it'll probably be a Rem. Model 7 in 7mm-08. I've always been a fan of Rem. but have read about more horror stories(including my own) than I have read good stories about their newer products. Now, what's the best reduced recoil load for deer in the 7mm-08? Guess we'll give it a go!! Thanks for all y'all's input.

After researching a bit more it appears I'll be going w/the FN made Win. M70 Featherweight Compact. Too many bad reports about the newer Rem.'s about bad accuracy & quality control.

Honestly I think it is just people jumping on the band wagon that like to trash talk. Never got a bad rem 700.

Just like all of a sudden you cant kill deer with a gun unless you change the stock, and the only scope that works is a zeiss or swarro. Everybody got opinons, many gear snobs (for lack of better words) on here and every where.

How true. Makes you wonder how we were ever able to shoot a deer with a Model 700 in 30-06 with a Weaver K4 and factory ammo...

Mossberg has some nice guns out. Check there site. They got one that takes mags and looks like it will rival Rugers gunsite.
I have cz 7.62x39 carbine. Fits the boy perfect and rides good in truck.
I like short action in common rounds like 243, 7mm08, 308.
I love the trappers in 357.

I agree with a lot of folks you don't have to change a bunch of stuff like stocks to get the job done. Lots of game harvested with plain Jane guns.

Never cared for Mossberg's. I like that CZ but not really in a 7.62x39. May be a bit too much kick for her now & probably doesn't come in reduced recoil rounds.

Mossberg makes a nice youth with fluted barrel in several calibres. Around 350 range. I have fn in 308 and it is like my coyote lites in 243 and 22-250.
I preference short actions and there are a lot of great ones. The 243 has so many loading now so you are good for several critters to harvest. 7mm08 is my favorite deer round in bolt Remington mountain lite with detach mags. No recoil and carry all day. It is wife's rifle but I sneak it out. Scoped with Nikon monarch
