Always heard Mini 14s were not very accurate rifles.
Recently Tom Gresham made the statement on his radio show that Ruger had "improved" the accuracy of the Mini 14. That was really all he said about it.
Anybody know anything about current production being more accurate than the earlier versions?
If so, what did they do to "improve" the accuracy?
Thanks for any information.

For all things Ruger: http://www.rugerforum.org/phpBB/It's a shame such a neat little rifle doesn't have a better reputation. I've read articles in magazines saying they're better, but I don't have any first hand knowledge. Most folks have told me to go buy/build an AR rather than buy a mini 14.
Shoot straight and always carry a 7mm Remington Magnum.

I had one a while back best i could do was about 2-3 inch groups at 50 yards. Not sure if i was running the wrong bullet weights or what but I was very unimpressed with the rifles accuracy. That was with a scope as well.

Tack Drivers they are not........
What they are is called "Combat Accurate".....1-3" @ 50yds, 3-5 @ 100 w/iron sights. A Scope may help this inaccuracy.
AR's are more accurate off a bench w/iron sights.

I was shooting mine with 68gr JHP at a target ~150 yards away with irons sights. Target was about 6" x 24" and I had no problem hitting it consistently from a standing position.
Seems accurate enough, I won't be bragging about sub MOA groups but I've hit everything I've shot at within reason with it.

I can shoot dime size groups at 100 yards all day long. Removed wooden stock and installed synthetic and reload my own bullets 55grain nosler. These are good fun guns !

Anytime your barrel is not "floating" your gonna have problems...

I put the Choate Synthetic stock on mine and loaded 52gr JHP w/Win 748 powder...That load would shoot like a house on fire but,
Out of the box and FMJ ammo they don't shoot like a bolt gun w/a scope, Mess with them and the ammo/loads, Yes they can shoot, if you got the eyes.

Thanks again for the link.

If they were improved on accuracy, they still fall way short.

Barrel whip and heat throw off the accuracy of most older pencil barrelled minis.
The newer 500 series minis have a slightly beefier barrel to partly address the concerns mentioned above.
Or, you can spend another $500 and get one 'accurized', or just invest those same dollars +- $1,000 in an AR of your choice and be done with it!

I just got a mini 14 this past week. I took it out back and was able to put a grapefruit sized group of 20 rounds from 40 yards. I know thats not all that fantastic, but I was standing and it was with open sights on a well used gun. I'm not gonna win any national shooting matches with it, but it is good enough for me.
I guess accuracy is a relative thing.

Has anyone on here had any luck with those add on scope mounts that fit in place of the side cover plate? I would like to put some sort of optics on my 14, but seems all the reviews I have read are bad.
Can you drill and tap a mini 14 to fit a rail or rings?
Anyone with any experience in this area please let me know.
Thanks
