went to the deer lease today and found that someone had stolen all of the copper wiring that was available from our camp house at our lease.the lease is located in trinity county, texas.thay also stole the central a/c unit from the camp house.i just wanted everyone to be aware of this problem, and to be on the lookout for people doing these things.

sorry to hear that. it's been a real problem in construction and new home site's to. but the deer lease, and especially one with an a/c unit ,the one's that did that are in for some seriously bad karma.

What gets me is all the work these guys do just to get scrap prices, plus they screw up a lot of stuff worth a heck of a lot more. Scrap prices have gone up, but still. Last I heard, long iron was $11 for 100lbs, and that's not even half a tank of gas.

I went to a recycling place for the first time today and watched several people bring in just junk for $2-3 bucks on some. It is absoultly nuts what they were scrapping.

But scrap copper is worth like $4 a lb, and it doesn't take that much to get a couple 100 lbs worth. We have had copper thieves at my job. They have stole thousands of dollars worth (scrap price...actual value would be in the tens of thousands) from behind our shop. We have 3 pending court cases on 5 different people, 2 of the people were long time employees, and the other 3 were just out of high school. It sucks...but rising gas prices and other inflations will only make it worse.

I do A/C work for a living, and it's become a huge problem in the construction industry.

We now take dig. pics of our copper after installation. That way we have proof because it can walk away within hours of leaving it.

It's always been a problem, but lately it has gotten outright insane. Jump over on the Fishing Forum, and read some threads about catalytic converters getting stolen from trucks parked at boat ramps. Supposedly, they have platinum in them.

Dope will make people do some crazy stuff.

We have had a problem with our temp labor taking copper while they are walking around the job site, on the clock.

paint all the copper you can when it is exposed. it reduces the value of what they can scrap. thieves are lazy so they usually won't bother with it, if it is painted. they are passing laws and enforcing them regarding scrap materials and the sale and possession. this isn't a gas price issue, it is a meth issue mainly and has been a huge problem in the construction industy for about 8 years now. that is why most builders have moved from copper to a "pex" style plumbing infastructure system.

I collect copper and sale it but the most i have ever made is $2.75 a pound and thats at the local places. The $4.00 per pound that was mentioned above is in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Those states until recently did not require a drivers license or vehicle tag to sale the stuff, so it was very hard to figure out who the thieves were. I think now some places are wanted proof in the form of a letter from the owner stating that they gave you the copper to resale.

Actually places in Longview were paying 3.85-4.00 not to long ago for copper. They were also paying like .85 cents per lb for aluminum cans.

I aslo got .76 per pound on the aluminum blocks and pistons that did not have any metal mixed in the dirty stuff they were paying me .36 per pound, as far as the cans goes I didnt save those, too much stuff lying around, and the fact they are so light today. I remember when an aluminum can was thicker and weighed more than todays cans.

I am also in the A/C business, and Dallas is now allowing us to run PVC for drain lines instead of copper. I think the laws need to change where you need plumbing or a/c licsence inorder to resale copper.

Here in San Antonio, the theives not only steal copper from job-sites after it has been installed, they also steal whole condensing units that are hooked-up and running. Some churches around here have lost all of their a/c units in one night, restaurants, businesses, etc. Refrigeration units have also been vandalized and stolen. Big business down here!!

zCopper is high...I know a guy who is buying old electrical transformers from cities and stripping them down. He takes the copper and sells it in crates to China. THEN he uses the oil out of the transformer and runs it as fuel in his diesel in about a 50/50 mixture...I dont think the EPA would approve...HAHA

That wouldn't work so well, because then you would leave out the Industrial Motor Repair Industry, and we resell hundreds of thousands of pounds of used copper a year.

Most all of your electric motors have copper windings and copper coils. One coil out of a Drag Line Generator has about 300# or more of copper, and each generator has 6 or more of these coils. All rotors either have copper windings or copper bars. JMO

Listening to the police scanner to see if On Star can locate my wife's car that was stolen (long story), 3 black guys just stole 80ft of telephone line in a white Ryder truck in Northeast Dallas. Two bailed out, the other one drove home and got popped when he got out.

You know what I hate the most about these thieves? If they put all that time and effort that they spend being a POS thief into looking for a job or getting some type of education, or learning a trade they wouldn't have to be out stealing other people's stuff that they work hard for. I have absolutely no use or sympathy for a thief.
