I noticed an article in the Oct 2012 Blue Press that .45 acp brass is being manufactured using small primers. Yesterday for the first time I went to buy some range brass and noticed the smaller primers. The fellow writing the article had an accident in his Dillon 650 which could have been severe. If I had not read the article i would have been cranking these out on my Dillon. Be aware!!

You need to know which you are loading, but they load just fine. I reload them all the time.

I believe Speer and Federal are both small primer in 45 acp. Not a big deal, I just sort them out, and put them in a different container. When I get enough of them, i'll load them.

Fatalwishes, thanks for the link. I have been reloading the same 45acp brass for a long time, and just happened to see the article in the Blue Press last month. I figured that there had to be a few fellows like me who use a progressive and have used the same brass multiple times, but haven't bought brass in ages.

I did not intend to start any discussion about whether or not to reload the brass or how to reload the small primed brass and do not even know if the reloading manuals have addressed this issue. Regular or magnum, do you use the same tables, etc. Just did not want some fellow to tear up his machine or possibly lose an eye or fingers.

Just use a standard small pistol primer with the same powder charge as you normally would.

this is why its a good Idea to visually inspect your brass before you start running them through the press.

IIRC ,It is the industries attempt to make a "green" lead free primer and save some money by switching to small primers.
