Oh my, I did not realize just how bad it was until I saw this.
Cheyenne Bottoms Waterfowl Report 10-11-12 Total duck numbers less than 50. No geese. Water level All pools are dry. We have no water due to the lingering drought and no flows in Arkansas River.. When the largest inland freshwater marsh in the country is dry and has less than 50 ducks at this date, that is not good. In a normal season a quarter of a million waterfowl stop to rest at CB. Not going to happen without water. I also visited a wetland in OK this month that normally would have several 100s of acres of water right now. I found less than an acre of water. I predict it will be a good early season for Texas. Those ducks that normally short stop on the refuges are gonna pass them by.

A bunch of walk in killers this year John. Do you think teal season is any indication of how big duck season will go?

No water in those areas is most likely the reason we had so many teal in Texas this year. If nothing changes in the next 3 weeks big duck season will be a boom year in Texas. As for the second split it will be hard to judge if nothing changes between now and Halfway through December we could all be in trouble. Those birds that normally filter out of those dry wet lands will be here and gone.

If this forecast for the rain is correct. It will be a duck season for the record books.

I was at Cheyenne and Quivera bottoms in Kansas a couple of times this past summer. Its true. Zero water and its looks like you sprayed the whole state with roundup.
Locals are very very worried.

I hunted quirva once in high school during teal season, water literally for miles around, knee deep, with gorgeous native marsh foodstuffs everywhere.
Can't imagine that place bone dry.

I knew it was dry, had a few friends hunting ks and Dakotas. I'm glad they are being smart and not pumping in wetlands.... If they did it could put us right back in the dust bowl.
You can already see the season headed to record numbers....just look at the North tx teal season.
Last few years north Oklahoma southern ks has had some stealer season due to mild winters, but this year lot of that water is gone...until spring

And another thing to consider is the places that do still have water are very, very low. This means the holes, rivers, marshes up North will freeze much earlier and in some cases, places that normally do not feeze up, will this year. I am in Illinois and have a river at the end of my street that is normally deep enough to hold some moving water until Feb. It is so shallow now that i can see the bottom in the middle. It will be frozen in Dec. this year. Locked up water means they gotta keep on going...

Sucks here. Local lakes are mud lined puddles. Opening day will be even more of a circus. Been getting enough rain to keep things green but no runoff. I don't believe people realize how bad it is getting. Local wetland...
