just as good as any of the others...as long as you can shoot it accurately without flinching.

Thats my all time favorite rifle..
I've heard people having issues at close ranges because the lead is traveling so fast and not a whole lot of time to do damage vs. shooting further distances making a bigger impact at a slower speed.. Personally, i've never had a deer run on me using this rifle..
-Shells are expensive unless you reload. -Get a muzzle break or a nice pad -Never forget ear protection! She will make the neighbors head ring and you will be the center of attention on the range.

Good gun, good caliber if you can handle it. It is definately more horse power than you need, but nothing wrong with that either.
It will be expensive to feed.

I still can't hear real good after one of my hunters shot a 300 RUM before I had my ears covered.

What kind of shells did you buy? I found Midway USA has several to choose from.. I personally have gone with the Nosler Customer 180 gr Accubond.. 3250 FPS...definatly cruising!

Shoulda opted for the .338 I have heard the 300 RUM will leave you under-gunned for Texas Whitetail.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Same gun and caliber I shoot. 180gr Nosler Partition has been flawless on Bobcats at 7 yards and Whitetails out to 311 yards. No its not too much gun for deer.......its just too much gun for recoil sissys.

A 300 RUM will come in handy if you get jumped by elephants or buffalo or something of the sort.

I framed my house using a 20lb sledge. Framing hammers are for sissys.
You can't overkill a deer, that's certainly true. You can, however, use the wrong tool for the job. There's nothing stopping you but 4x times the cost of ammo is a wallet killer!

Way too much gun for Texas deer. I have a .300 weatherby mag and that's way overkill for deer. My sons .243 bullet shocked the crap out of the shoulder on his deer last year. I love my .300 but unless I'm shooting over 300 yds I don't see the need in it. .270 is overkill for Texas deer. The rum will work if that's what u got but the price of shells alone wouldn't make it ideal. I reload my .300 and save a ton. I

do you think it is overkill for whitetail? You can't overkill a deer. When my bursitis got too bad I dropped down to a 300 Weatherby. I has worked just fine. What I really like is to run a 375 H&H hot. I also had 100% success with a 22 mag when I was (much) younger. If you want to use a heavier powder charge than the bullets in most 243's that is your business. Horsepower is good. With $4 a gallon fuel and $10 a bag corn the cost of ammo is not much of an issue. You can underkill a deer - what is really bad is when there is no recovery for you or the deer. Go forth and enjoy your loudenbanger.

I have a 7MM ultra and have killed a lot of TX deer with it, however have since dropped down to a 257 Weatherby Mag. Out of all the deer I shot with it I never had a single one drop in its tracks with the 7MM. It would suck lung out the other side, but they would run like they were never scratched for about 50-75 yards before running out of blood. Shot one at 460 yards and he just ran 50 yards and stopped to look around. Shot him again and broke both shoulders. Both shots not 3" apart. My only guess was the velocity of the round. Was just zipping through. Now they would not go far so I guess it really was not a problem. But with the smaller bullet I have found that usually they are DRT and no tracking job needed... Can you go too small, yes. And will your 300 kill them, no doubt. Just whatever you feel comfortable shooting then use it. Just my findings. Now to add, my 7MM Rem Ultra is still my backup gun....
