I was tracking a deer for one of our hunters and walked up on this, talk about a heart attack! I have been in the woods all my life and have never seen a snake eat a rabbit before. he had the rabbits head all the way down and was working on the rest of him.

Several years ago I was quail hunting with my labs near Stanton tx and my dog fires off in a mesquite and comes out with a limp but dead rabbitt and as I'm staring at this rabbit I hear the tell tell buzzing of a rattler. I'm assuming the snake had bit the cottontail and was in process of tracking him down when my dog found it 1st. I got my dogs back, filled the tree full of lead and got the heck out of there. I saw the snake but didn't stick around and dig it out because I was worried about my dogs retrieving it for me.

I've owned a few snakes over the years, and I'm amazed at what they can handle when swallowing food, but I think his eyes are bigger than his stomach.

Great pics. Never seen a snake eat a rabbit but have killed rattlesnakes that have eaten them already.

Full meal deal right there. I killed one Friday night that had just eaten something, but the one I killed was not eating as big as your snake was. Been seeing a lot of snakes with the weather cooling off. I guess they are in need of a den.
