This morning I had the great honor of sharing the hunting blind with one of the West Texas PD's finest, Jason aka Jasb and his dad Danny. Thank you both so much for sharing some time with me. You are some great guys, and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate what you both have done and are doing for your community and for our country. Both Jason and Danny are veterans, Jason serving time in the Army, while; Danny made a long career being a Pilot of a C-130 in the Air Force. What a great conversation we had at dinner and then in the hunting blind.
The hunt this morning was just about prefect. You could not have asked for a better morning to hunt. I had been seeing a group of Red Stag down this one road. So we got there pretty early this morning to setup and I put out some corn down the road well be for day light. Well 20 minutes before day light a huge sounder of hogs came in, there were so many hogs I could not see the shine of the road. It looked like the brush on either side of the road had just closed in. All you could hear was hogs grunting, squealing and, chewing on corn. That 20 minutes was an extremely long 20 minutes waiting for enough light to shoot. Finally, light enough to make out all the hogs and deer behind and around them. The animals were enjoying a corn banquet 80 - 90 yards in front of our blind. There had to be 50 hogs. Good thing there was also 7-8 Red Deer.
I enjoy watching the Rad Deer Stags kick the crap out of hogs. I guess I am sick that way. They have no issues with putting a horn to a porker. I saw several Stags give a friendly reminder of the food chain to the hogs this morning. So after watching the hogs and Red Deer for 5-10 minutes we were able to pick out the Stag we were looking to shoot. Just then a whitetail doe walks out, time to go back to watching. I tell Jason that as soon as the doe clears the stag and gave him a clean shot to take it. 3 seconds later bang!!!! I guess we did not have to wait long.
Jason connected on a 6x7 Stag. The Stag was hit center mass in the shoulder and went maybe 20 yards when we heard the death crash. It was all smiles for Jason and Danny. There is nothing better than watching a son hunt with his dad, even if they are grown. Those smiles on their faces is why I do this...
We had two Texas sized grins in that blind this morning.
We waited about 15 minutes and here comes another group of hogs, at this point I am a little tired of seeing hogs plow through the corn so I put a hole in ones head. I picked out a large sow, laid the cross hairs on her ear and gave her a 30-30 head ache.
With two animals down it is now time so go see what we have accomplished:
What a great Red Stag that Jason (Jasp) brought down. One of the best animals I have been on a hunt for. Thank you so much for coming and hunting this magnificent animal with me and, thanks for bringing your dad. The people of west Texas are very fortunate to have you watching over them. It was an honor to meet you two!!!
Thank you DB Hunting Ranch (
