I have a young 1.5 year old buck that will go from one cam and end up on another cam 4.6 miles away in one night. I haven't seen this before and thought it was kind of unusual. He has made this travel at least 5 times according to the trail cameras. He is a forked horn that has broke one side completely off. I do know it is the same deer. Other deer are lucky to make it 500 yards as there is plenty to eat. Any thoughts?

It varies. Young bucks will travel further because they get pushed out by older dominant bucks, but I have seen older dominant bucks travel a long way too. Depends on where the girls are in most cases during pre rut and rut. I have seen bucks range 5 or 6 miles as well.

How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

depends on what they're doing and their usual habits. We've got some that will travel 3 miles from morning to evening feeding areas.

that's pretty unusual, especially pre rut. In pre rut, they seem to stay around a mile. During the rut, I've seen them a few miles away.

Our deer will travel 4-5 miles without hesitation. I have deer on camera up to 6 miles apart. I have watched them travel 3 while sitting in the stand. Also, it isn't just the young deer, the 4.5+ will do the same thing. It doesn't take a deer very long to cover 3 miles, even when they are just grazing.

We have a good population, plenty of feed, plenty of cover...so what is the reason?

I've seen the same thing with our deer, traveling son's of guns. I don't doubt that there are some deer that are homebodies, but not all.

we had one that was 7 that was making a loop around half of the county. Prretty much everyone within a 4 mile radius had pics of him at some point over the past few years.

I think deer move for two reasons. to breed & look for food. Deer on our lease also scout new areas and like to explore. We see the same deer all the way across the lease in new territory but then he will return back home where he spends most of his time and shows up on camera day after day. I also always see deer during hunting season I haven't seen on camera all year. There always seems to be a deer shot no one has seen on camera. Usually during the rut when the deer are roaming.

Distance traveled shrinks with age for the most part. We had a buck on our lease that as a 3 year old would roam the whole back half of the ranch. As a 4 year old he cut that range in half. As a 5 and 6 year old he probably didnt stray but a half mile at most.

Not unusual at all for bucks to roam once the velvet comes off.

You are burying the lead, you can see three miles from your stand? You using a telescope?

I think it depends on the deer, his maturity and his position in the area deer herd. I could be wrong but I think that mature deer will widen their range to a much larger degree than we think. A mature deer would have no fear from other bucks. IMHO

For example the live wide deer pic in my sig would only show up once a month at my feeder on a wed or thurs in the middle of the month. I first saw him as a very wide forky and I could have killed him but I gave him a pass. For three years after he drove me crazy. If I went down to hunt on a Thursday he was there the day before or sometimes the day after. I have a lot of pics on him - Sept through Jan - but only in the middle of the month and middle of the week. I hunted hard for him but it wasn't meant to be I guess.

Yes, from one ridge I can see at least 1.5 miles to the east and 1.5 miles to the west. Don't need a telescope to see that far up

"typically" most deer herds dont travel far .....
within a square mile or so ....
range conditions effect "typical" behaviour
and during rut bucks may go 5 or 6 miles lookin ,,,
